How Does the Argentine League Work?
The Argentine League is second only to the Brazilian League in terms of prestige in South America, but it still exhibits the same amount of passion and skill as its famous neighbour. With fanatical fans and a tradition for unearthing hugely talented players, the Argentine League is one that everyone interested in football should keep a good eye on.
Primera Division (Superliga)
There are currently 20 different teams plying their trade in the Argentine Primera Division, which is the highest level of football in the country. The way that the league operates is slightly strange in comparison to the other major leagues in the world though, as a season effectively sees each team play two round robin tournaments against each other, with a champion being crowned for each of them. For this reason there are two championships up for grabs each year. This means plenty of ways to bet on Argentine football and plenty of markets all season long.
Relegation
If you thought that crowning a champion in Argentina was tough, then relegation is even tougher! This is because teams are only relegated after the second of the two championships and the decision regarding the teams relegated is made on their average number of points over the last three years. The two clubs with the worst averages are automatically relegated and the clubs with the 17th and 18th worst records play the teams rated 3rd and 4th in the Primera B Nacional in playoffs, with the winners playing in the top division for the next season. This system has been criticized as it is seen to protect the top clubs from relegation, although this didn’t help River Plate – Argentina’s most successful team ever – who were relegated at the end of the 2010-2011 season.
Continental Cup Qualification
Qualification for the continental cups – the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana – is decided by equally confusing methods. The winners of the two championships are given entry to the Copa Libertadores, as are the winners of the first championship in the next season (as the tournament begins after this first championship finishes). Two other places are given to the teams with the best average over each of the three aforementioned championships. Copa Sudamericana places are allocated to the six best performing teams over the course of the season.
Who are the Top Teams in the Argentine League?
The most successful team in the history of Argentine football is River Plate, with 33 titles to their name since the league began. As already mentioned though, they were relegated in the 2010-2011 season, which caused a massive shock throughout the country and violent protests in the streets. The current champions are Boca Juniors, who won the first championship of this season. Other strong clubs include Velez Sarsfield, Estudiantes and Independiente, with the latter being the most successful Argentine club in continental competitions with seven victories in the Copa Libertadores.
With River Plate struggling Boca really are the team to look out for at all times.
