Football Tips: Saturday 17th June (U21’s)

U21 Football TipsThe European U21 Championships continue on Saturday with a further two games, this time from Group B, which features the two Iberian peninsula teams, Portugal and Spain as well as two teams from the former Yugoslavia, Serbia and FYR Macedonia.

The action gets under way at 5pm with Portugal U21 taking on Serbia U21, which is followed at 7:45pm by the talented Spanish team, many people’s favourites to win the U21 title outright, taking on the outsiders in the group Macedonia U21.

Key Stats
  • These teams have met twice before at U21 level and it is Serbia who have won both of those matches.
  • Portugal qualified for the Championships winning eight of their ten group games and drawing the other two.
  • Portugal will be able to call on the services of Renato Sanches, the Bayern Munich midfielder who is rated as one of the top young prospects in European football.
  • Serbia will be reliant on the goals of striker Uros Djurdjevic, who netted nine goals in eight games in the qualifiers.
Analysis:

Portugal come into this tournament as one of the fancied teams to be in with a chance of winning the event. They were runners up to Sweden back in 2015 and many experts feel that the current crop of stars is even better than the team that went so close back then.

Serbia though are a tricky side and like Portugal, found the net plenty of times in their qualifying group for the tournament. The Serbian’s are always going to be strong and well-organised and have a decent record at U21 level over the years.

However in terms of the talent available to them in the squad, Portugal are the clear favourites here and it would be foolhardy to think that they are not going to get their campaign off to a solid start by landing the three points on offer here in a game that I think will see a fair few goals.

Key Stats
  • Spain have won both the two previous U21 games between the sides scoring five and conceding none.
  • Macedonia have the best recent record with 4 wins and 1 draw, whereas Spain have won just 2 of the last 5, drawing 3.
  • Spain have won the European U21 Championship four times in total and this is the first time that Macedonia have ever qualified.
  • The Spanish squad includes big players including Hector Bellerin, Gerard Deulofeu, Saul Niguez, Inaki Williams & Marco Asensio.
Analysis:

The bookmakers feel that this game is a mismatch and while Macedonia have done very well in qualifying for this event, eliminating both Northern Ireland and Scotland in the process, they are going to find the game against Spain a huge step up in class.

The Spanish can call on some outstanding talent for this tournament, ex-Everton man Gerard Deulefeu scored eight in qualifying for the Spanish, while Munir El Haddadi grabbed seven, although he is absent from the Spanish squad through injury.

It’s hard to make any case for Macedonia here as they look outmatched in every department you wish to think of. The bookies have Spain and Portugal as the top two sides in this group and Macedonia as the whipping boys and unfortunately for them, I think this is how this game is likely to go.
