It Is British Open Week – Who Will Be Challenging for the Claret Jug?

It is that time of the year again! Schools have closed for the summer and that means it is time for the best golfers in the world to tee it up at the fourth and final Major of the season, the British Open.
This year, it is the turn of Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland to host the tournament. It will be the third time that the Irish links has hosted the event having previously done so in 1951 and 2019.
So far this season, Rory McIlroy (The Masters), Scottie Scheffler (USPGA Championship) and J.J.Spaun (US Open) have claimed the three previous Majors. Will they or any of the other 150+ golfers in the field be celebrating a Major victory on the Northern Irish coast later this week?
Latest Outright Odds – British Open Golf
The odds shown below were correct with bet365 Sport at the time of writing, but may have changed in the meantime.
- Scottie Scheffler – 5.50
- Rory McIlroy – 7.00
- Jon Rahm – 13.00
- Bryson DeChambeau – 17.00
- Xander Schauffele – 19.00
- Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood – 21.00
- Shane Lowry, Viktor Hovlund – 23.00
- Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre – 26.00
- Colin Morikawa – 29.00
- 35/1 bar.
Amongst a number of European golfers in this list, Shane Lowry is due a good week on home soil, especially after having a torrid time at the US Open last month. He also won the Open when it was held on this course back in 2019. As such, this course and style of golf should be much more suited to the Irishman.
Scottie Scheffler has not yet landed a British Open title, so he will certainly be motivated to land what would be a fourth Major title in the past four years.
Last year’s champion Xander Schauffele is not in great form, and Rory McIlroy has struggled for form since his emotional Masters victory.
With Portrush being a long course, Bryson DeChambeau has to come into the equation, especially if the weather is more benign over the weekend. With a par four hole of over 500 yards, plus a par five of over 600 yards, players with distance from the tee could be at an advantage.
The European quintet of Aberg, Fleetwood, Hovlund, Hatton and MacIntyre should also not be ruled out. All of these players have had patches of good form of late, with some strong finishes in a number of key events. If a non-Major winner is going to break their duck in this event from Europe, then the smart money is on one of these five players doing so.
Famous Open Champions Competing
While their chances of victory may be slim a number of famous names to have won The Open willbe competing in Northern Ireland this week. Including Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Stewart Cink, Padraig Harrington, Justin Leonard, Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Francesco Molinari, Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen.
