Patrick Mahomes - Kansas City Chiefs

On Sunday 9th February, the Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to become the first Super Bowl winners to win three successive Lombardi Trophies in a row. Standing in their way are the Philadelphia Eagles, the NFC Champions, who set a record point-score in their Championship victory over the Washington Commanders a fortnight ago.

The match is a repeat of the 2023 Super Bowl, where the Kansas City Chiefs eked out a 38-35 win over the Eagles. The Chiefs then defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl 25-22 in overtime.

Let’s now take a look at how both teams have fared over the season and look at some of the top betting options for this massive global sporting event.

Super Bowl LIX Preview

Kansas City Chiefs (17-2) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (16-3)

  • Venue: Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Kick Off: 11.30pm GMT on Sunday 9th February

Kansas City Chiefs (17-2)

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have become the new Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in the NFL. This will be the Chiefs fifth Super Bowl in the past six years. They have won three of those, twice beating the San Francisco 49ers and then beating the Philadelphia Eagles. Losing to Tampa Bay in 2020.

This season they had a 15-2 record in the regular season, losing only to the Buffalo Bills before they rested all their starters in a final day defeat to the Denver Broncos.

As top seed in the AFC, they had a bye week on Wildcard Weekend, before beating the Houston Texans 23-14 in the Divisional Round and then the Buffalo Bills in the Championship Game 32-29.

Strengths:

  • The best QB in the NFL is Patrick Mahomes.
  • Vastly experienced and had the best regular season record in the NFL.
  • Outstanding head coach, Andy Reid.
  • Vastly improved defense.
  • Frank Clark (DT), Trent McDuffie (CB) and Travis Kelce (TE) also NFL leading players,

Weaknesses:

  • Not the strongest wide receiving corps.
  • Struggle to score too many points in games.

Philadelphia Eagles (17-3)

Nick Sirianni polarises opinions in the City of Brotherly Love, but he has led the Eagles to a second Super Bowl in three years, against the team that beat them two years ago. Built on a rock solid offensive line, their offense was potent already but reached a new level with the signing of RB Saquon Barkley in free agency. Barkley has run for over 2000 yards in the regular season. Injuries have hit the team hard on the lines, but the Eagles will benefit from the two weeks off ahead of the Super Bowl.

With a 14-3 record, achieved despite opening the season 2-2, the Eagles were also second seed in the NFC, beating the Green Bay Packers 22-10 on Wildcard Weekend. They then defeated the Los Angeles Rams 28-22 in Divisional weekend before thumping the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship game.

Strengths:

  • Outstanding offense, especially along the offensive line, at wide receiver and running back.
  • Solid defence that keeps them in close games.
  • Able to sustain long drives to keep opposition offense off the field.
  • Good depth at RB, WR and TE.
  • AJ Brown (WR), Saquon Barkley (RB), Devonta Smith (WR) and most of the o-line are NFL top calibre players.

Weaknesses:

  • A number of offensive linemen are injured, a key part of the Eagles offense.
  • QB Jalen Hurts play this season has been patchy.

Last Match

Philadelphia Eagles 21-17 Kansas City Chiefs (20th November 2023).

After beating the Eagles in the SuperBowl earlier in 2023, the Chiefs went down to a 21-17 defeat to the Chiefs at Arrowehead in their last fixture between the two teams, ending a run of four successive wins for the Chiefs in the fixture.

Our Super Bowl Prediction – Kansas City Chiefs 24-35 Philadelphia Eagles

The Chiefs are good but lost against the Bills high-scoring offense this season. The Eagles offense is even better and can outscore the Chiefs offense, with the difference being the quality of the Eagles at WR and RB.
