What Must England Do to Win their Euro 2024 Group?

England look certain to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2024. They top Group D after the first two fixtures with four points. It’s an understatement though to write that their performances so far have been disappointing. What must England do to win this group?

There have been many surprising quotes from England managers in the past. They’ve had to explain why no major trophy has been won since 1966. Few have been as shocking as Gareth Southgate’s reason as to why England are struggling. They are still the second favourites to win Euro 2024 and are 9/2 at BetVictor to triumph on July 14.

Problems in Midfield

It seems Kalvin Phillips has been the most influential England player and he’s yet to find someone to replace the midfielder. That’s the Kalvin Philliips who has played just 24 Premier League games in the last two seasons. Manchester City let him go on loan to West Ham United where he failed to impress.

Southgate left him out of the England squad as a result of his poor form and did the same to Jack Grealish. He may be regretting those decisions now. Phillips might not be in form but there have been times when players haven’t been performing well for their club but do so for their country. Marcus Rashford is an example of that and he’s not in Germany either.

England have so far beaten Serbia 1-0 and drawn 1-1 with Denmark. They end the group on June 25 with a match against Slovenia who have drawn their opening two games against the Danes and Serbia. It’s 1/7 at bet365 they win this group.

What has been frustrating so far about England has been how they’ve played after going 1-0 up. Rather than pushing on they have been sitting back and basically boring the pants off the viewers.

When you have players such as Declan Rice, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Boyaka Saka, that seems an almost impossible task. They were lucky to get a point against Denmark and you have to worry how the likes of France, Spain and Germany might fare against them.

Changes are needed if England are to win Euro 2024. The experiment of playing Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield just isn’t working.

Southgate is likely to give Cole Palmer a chance against Slovenia. Now there’s a player who is in great form and the same can be said about Adam Wharton. He impressed in his only international match and should definitely be given a chance even if only as a second-half substitute.

There’s been criticism of Harry Kane from some quarters. The fact remains though that he scored England’s goal against Denmark. He’s 13/2 at bet365 to be the top scorer in this tournament. If you believe he can score a goal against Slovenia, William Hill will give you odds of evens on him doing so. The Bayern Munich striker is 13/5 to score the first goal.

England are 4/11 at William Hill to beat Slovenia on Tuesday. It’s 15/4 with the same bookmaker that the match ends in a draw. If that was the result it’d be the fourth game in a row that Slovenia have drawn.

Slovenia on Unbeaten Run

Could Slovenia cause a shock?  They are unbeaten in their last eight internationals so aren’t an easy side to defeat. Slovenia only have two points so far and that might be enough to see them into the last 16 if finishing third in the group.

The Slovenians could even end up winning the group if they were to win this match. The odds of them getting the victory against England are 8/1 at BetVictor.

A low-scoring match might be on the cards here. Four of the last five Slovenia internationals have had under 2.5 goals scored in them. That stat has also come up in the last three England games. William Hill gives odds of 17/20 on under 2.5 goals being scored in this match.

England can win the group and a bet on them beating Slovenia with under 2.5 goals scored is 21/10 at bet365.
