Rory Mcllroy celebrating

With just 49 golfers remaining following Sepp Straka’s withdrawal ahead of this past weekend’s BMW Championship, the FedEx Cup playoffs continue this coming weekend with the culmination of the regular PGA Tour season; The Tour Championship.

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia is the setting for this third and final stage of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, where the 30 top golfers of the year compete for the biggest cash prize of the season; a prize pool of $40 million.

In the first weekend of the playoffs Justin Rose defeated J.J.Spaun in a playoff to win the St. Jude’s Championship. That field of golfers was trimmed to 50 of whom 49 (minus Sepp Straka) competed in the BMW Championship this past weekend, which Scottie Scheffler won.

Now, just the top 30 players after the BMW Championship will face off to pick up the biggest cash prize of the season at the Tour Championship and with it the title of PGA Tour Top Golfer of the 2025 season.

Contenders For The Tour Championship Top Prize

Scottie Scheffler (United States) – 1st in FedEx Rankings

Another year with a Major and once again, Scheffler proved to be the most consistent of players, holding onto his number 1 ranking in the world throughout the season. He has played consistently in the two other FedEx Cup playoffs and as the defending Tour Champion, he will want to claim the top prize once again. His victory in the BMW Championship this past weekend makes him the hot favourite to win The Tour Championship for a second year in a row.

Robert MacIntyre (Scotland) – 20th in FedEx Rankings

The Scottish player impressed at the BMW Championship and his consistency means that he cannot be overlooked for the big prize next weekend. MacIntyre seems to be on the brink of making a major breakthrough and winning this trophy would certainly be a start. He was angry after letting a four-shot lead over Scheffler drift away in a poor final round at the BMW, but he is still very much in with a shout of lifting the trophy.

Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) – 2nd in FedEx Rankings

The Irishman wasn’t at his best in the BMW Championship at the weekend, finishing on three-under-par, well behind the leading duo of Scheffler and MacIntyre. However in a season that has seen him win three events on the PGA Tour, including The Masters, McIlroy will certainly be amongst those in with a shout at East Lake this weekend for what would be a record-setting fourth Tour Championship win.

Justin Rose (England) – 4th in FedEx Rankings

After losing in The Masters playoff to Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose continued a solid season but without a win until he won the St Jude’s Championship, the first of the three-legged FedEx Cup Playoffs. That win catapulted him up the rankings. He didn’t shine quite so brightly at the BMW Championship but his form and quality means that he cannot be discounted from being in contention next weekend.
