Who will be the star cueman in Wuhan at the 2024 Wuhan Open?

This week, many of the top snooker players in the world will be competing in Wuhan, China to become the latest Wuhan Open Champion.
With plenty of ranking points up for grabs, not to mention a hefty cheque for the tournament winner, this key rambling event comes at a crucial juncture of the season.
To gauge who we feel will land the win in this event, let’s take a closer look at the players that have dominated the six previous ranking events leading up to the 2024 Wuhan Open.
The Winners Of The Six Ranking Snooker Tournaments So Far In The 2024/25 Season
The six ranking events of the season so far have produced the following winners and runners-up.
- Championship League – Ali Carter 3-1 Jackson Page
- Shanghai Masters – Judd Trump 11-5 Shaun Murphy
- Xi’an Grand Prix – Kyren Wilson 10-8 Judd Trump
- Saudi Arabia Masters – Judd Trump 10-9 Mark Williams
- English Open – Neil Robertson 9-7 Wu Yize
- British Open – Mark Selby 10-5 John Higgins
Why Is Wuhan A Key Tournament In The 2024/25 Season?
The Wuhan Open is one of the few ranking events to take place in China each year and it offers one of the biggest prize pools of the year for players to compete for (£700,000).
The tournament will be played at the China Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Center in Wuhan and it is the sixth ranking event of the season.
A large qualifying competition was held earlier in the year at Leicester which saw a number of players, including Luca Brecel and Mark Selby, bow out. Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Allen withdrew from the tournament.
A few players will play a small number of outstanding qualifying matches in China before the tournament begins. The First Round proper, which consists of 32 matches, will be held across October the 6th and 7th.
The tournament is the best of nine frames through to the semi-finals, where it is best of 11 frames. The final is the best of 19 frames.
Who Is Favourite To Land The Win in Wuhan?
A look at the season so far shows there have been five different winners of the six tournaments. Only Judd Trump has won twice, in Shanghai and then again in Saudi Arabia.
The Wuhan Open tournament has been held once previously in 2023, and on that occasion Judd Trump was also the winner. Trump defeated Ali Carter 10-7 in the final to take home the top prize of £140,000 for the winner.
As you can see, with Trump reaching three of the six finals, winning two and also being the current holder of this trophy, plus the fact he has won already in China this season, seems to suggest that the English snooker star is the man to back.
He is seeded first in the tournament as current Champion and with the likes of Mark Williams, Mark Selby, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Allen already out of the tournament, our pick would be another Wuhan win for Judd Trump!
