There are several multiple bet options available to the modern-day bettor. Alongside the accumulator, the Trixie bet is arguably one of the easiest and certainly cheapest, to use.
A Trixie bet is a type of multiple bet called a full cover bet. That means that it covers all the different permutations for two or more of your selections to win.
This bet type always comprises three selections.
It is part of a family of full cover bets that includes the Yankee (4 selections), Super Yankee or Canadian (5 selections), Heinz (6 selections), Super Heinz (7 selections) and Goliath (8 selections) that all function in a similar way.
A Trixie is also very similar to a Full Cover with Singles bet called a Patent, and it is also available as an each way option. Both of which we will explore later in this guide.
If you plan to place a Trixie bet, and better still winning it, then check out our simple explanation to this popular three selections bet below!
How does a Trixie Bet work?
A Trixie bet is a multiple bet. By that we mean it contains multiple selections on the bet slip, in this case, three selections.
It is a form of bet that is popular when betting on horse racing, football, or any number of other sports where the bet type is compatible.
There are four individual bets in a standard Trixie bet. They are three doubles and one treble.
Example of a Trixie Bet
A punter places a Trixie Bet by adding three selections to their bet slip. Their unit stake for this bet is £10.
- Selection A – Aston Villa and Everton to draw – 3/1
- Selection B – Manchester City to beat Manchester United – Evens
- Selection C – Crystal Palace to beat Chelsea – 4/1
A Trixie bet consists of four different bets, each covering all the possible doubles and the treble bet possible with the three selections.
- Doubles – Selections A&B to win, Selections A&C to win, Selections B & C to win.
- Treble – Selections A, B and C to win.
As such, with four bets within the Trixie, you would need to place 4x your chosen Unit Stake to place this bet. So, for the punter above, this Trixie Bet would cost them £40 to place in total.
Your bet slip will have a section for multiple bets, where you will be able to select the Trixie option to place the bet.
How does a Trixie Bet pay out winning bets?
Now for the exciting part! How you get your hands on some Trixie Bet winnings!
How much you could win depends on three factors:
- How many of your three selections win.
- The unit stake placed on each bet.
- The odds of each of the three selections on your bet slip.
If none or just one of your selections win, then your bet is a loser. You lose your stake, and you’ll need to try again.
If two of your three selections win, then one of your Double Bets will come in, but the other two double bets and the treble bet will lose.
If all three selections win, then all three of your double bets win, and so does your treble bet. This is the best possible and most profitable outcome when placing a Trixie Bet.
Let’s examine what these different scenarios would mean for the bet example we used above.
Double Bets
- Selections A&B – If Aston Villa & Everton draw & Man City beat Man Utd – £80 return (£40 Profit)
- Selections A&C – If Aston Villa & Everton draw & Crystal Palace beat Chelsea – £200 return (£160 profit)
- Selections B&C – If Man City beat Man Utd and Palace beat Chelsea – £100 return (£60 profit)
So, if just two of your selections win on your Trixie, then the Double combo of the two winning bets would pay out, but the other two would not.
Treble Bet
- Selections A, B&C – If all three selections win – £400 return PLUS all double bet winnings shown above.
However, if all three of your bets win, then you are going to hit the jackpot as not only do all three of the Double Bets pay out for you (£380 in total), but you would also land an additional £400 from the treble bet being a winner.
That would give you a total return of £780, meaning £740 profit and you get your £40 stakes back too.
What is an easy way to understand how the payouts work with a Trixie Bet?
The easiest way to understand how different options for a Trixie Bet could pay out is using a Trixie bet calculator.
You can find many different calculator options across various betting sites. Additionally, you can also use them to work out the potential returns for other multiple bet types, such as an accumulator or a Yankee bet.
Also, the calculator will show you how much your Trixie bet will cost, even if it is an each-way bet. Furthermore, you can review the different winning permutations from your selections, and how much they could return should any of the four bets, three doubles and a treble, win.
You can use a bet calculator before you place a Trixie bet. This enables you to clarify in your mind exactly what you stand to win or lose depending on how your three selections perform.
Can I place an each-way Trixie?
Yes, there is an each-way bet option for the Trixie bet and it is as easy to place this type of bet as a standard Trixie.
To place an each-way Trixie, simply add your three selections to the betting slip as you would a standard Trixie wager.
On the bet slip, there should be a box to click to make the bet an each-way bet. Click on this box when you have selected that you want the placed bet to be a Trixie.
The key thing to remember with an each-way Trixie bet is that it costs twice as much as a standard Trixie. That is because you are covering the win and the place for each selection, not just the win.
Remember too, some markets you can place a standard win Trixie bet on are not suitable for each-way Trixie bets, such as football betting. Others, such as horse racing, are much better suited to placing an each way Trixie.
What’s the difference between a Trixie and a Patent bet?
There is one difference between a Trixie bet and a Patent bet.
On a patent bet, your bet will also cover each of the three selections as single bets, alongside the three doubles and the treble bet you back with a Trixie.
Adding the three single bets to the four bets that make up a Trixie means that a Patent bet needs to cover a total of seven lines.
A breakdown of the number of bets in a Patent
- Each of the three selections as a single bet – (A to win, B to win, C to win) – Three bets.
- Three doubles (A & B to win, A & C to win, B & C to win) – Three bets.
- One Treble (A, B and C to win) – One bet.
- Total – 7 bets (lines) per Patent bet.
Therefore, with the singles, a patent bet would cost 7x your unit stake (3 units more than a Standard Trixie bet).
However, those three extra individual bets mean that you need just one of your selections to win to make your bet generate a winning return.
However, whether it is enough to put you in profit depends on the odds of the sole winning selection.
Which is the best option – An Accumulator bet or a Trixie bet?
In truth, there is not one ‘better’ option for sports betting fans when it comes to Trixies and accumulator bets.
It is very much a case of the situation dictating which is the best option for you.
For example, many sports betting sites will have a welcome offer for customers where they can have a free bet.
Often a bet offer such as this may not allow the user to place a Trixie bet using the bonus funds. However, most offers will allow you to place an acca bet.
However, if you have a trio of good selections from a horse racing meeting, or three full time result bets that you like the look of, you may prefer to stake the extra for a Trixie bet.
That will give you the flexibility of backing three doubles and one treble, rather than the single treble as an accumulator bet.
Those 4 bets give you a return if one of your selections lets you down.
However, if funds are a little tight and you are confident in your three selections, then opting to place an accumulator makes more sense. As it will mean you stake less, but could still earn significant winnings if the bet is a winner.
Hopefully you will now know what a Trixie bet is, how winnings are calculated on the bet and how it differs from a standard treble bet and a patent.
A Trixie can be a useful bet for sports betting punters, especially when horse racing betting, but you can also use the Trixie bet on football markets, and across other sports, too.
