How Does the MLS Work?
The MLS season is played from March to October every year and is composed of 26 teams – of which 23 are from the United States and the other 3 from Canada. The league follows much the same format as the Premier League wherein every team gets to host and visit all the other teams once. All in all, the 26 teams get to play 34 games in the regular season. After 34 total games played, the team which as finished top of the leage are awarded the supporter’s shield. After that comes the MLS Cup Playoffs in which the top 10 teams compete for the MLS Cup Championship.
If you do join one of the recommended MLS betting sites listed above in the comparison table make sure you are aware of the difference between winning the league and winning the play-off final. Don’t make a costly mistake.
Three American MLS teams automatically make it to the CONCACAF Champions League. These teams are the Supporter’s Shield winner and the two MLS Cup finalists. Canadian teams are excluded from this as they have their own qualification system via the Canadian Championship.
In cases where the same team qualifies multiples times (i.e. win the Supporter’s Shield and make it to the Cup Finals at the same time) or if a Canadian team is able to qualify to the CONCACAF Champions League via the MLS qualifying berths, the American MLS team(s) with the best regular season record will qualify instead.
Who Are the Best MLS Teams?
Now we’ve looked at where to bet on MLS football online lets take a look at which teams you should be looking out for in the league.
The most successful team ever to grace the MLS stage – at least in terms of titles won – is LA Galaxy who are famous for their connection with David Beckham and Landon Donovan. They’ve won 5 MLS cup titles to date but haven’t lifted the MLS Cup trophy since 2014.
The Washington D.C. based club D.C. United are the leagues second most successful outfit is one of the first teams that started in the league way back in ’96. They have gone on to win the big prize four times, their latest being that in 2004. D.C. United was the first team to lift the MLS Cup back to back in the 1996 and 1997 seasons, and the first team to win the Supporter’s Shield and then go on to win the MLS Cup Finals in the year 1997.
Houston Dynamo, Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders FC and the San Jose Earthquakes are trailing LA and D.C. United closely with 2 MLS Cups each. From the teams with two titles Houston Dynamo have the most remarkable story. The team from Texas lifted the MLS Cup back to back on their first two seasons in the league (2006 and 2007). They are the last team to lift the cup twice in consecutive years.
