How Does the NIFL Premiership Work?
Well know you know where to bet on Northern Irish Premier League games so lets take a look at how the league works in Northern Ireland.
The Northern Irish Premier League also known as the Danske Bank Premier League is, as the name suggests, the highest league for football in Northern Ireland. It comprises of 12 different teams all of which are competing to finish at the top of the table and thus be crowned the champions of the country.
Each of the teams play each other 3 times and after these games are finished the league is split into the top six and the bottom six. The top and the bottom teams then play each other for a further time, with the top half battling for the title and European qualification, and the bottom teams trying to avoid relegation.
European Qualification
European places are awarded to the teams finishing in the top three positions in the league. The champions enter into the Champions League, while 2nd and 3rd gain automatic qualification into the Europa League. Occasionally the fourth placed team will also gain a place in the Europa League, should the winner of the Irish Cu already have qualified through their place in the league.
Promotion & Relegation
When it comes to relegation the team that finishes bottom of the league is automatically relegated to the lower tier of football, while the top placed team in the lower league will gain automatic promotion into the Northern Irish Premier League.
The team finishing second bottom in the league will go into a two legged play-off against the second placed team from the second division, with the overall winner gaining a place in the Premier League and the loser playing in the lower league during the next season.
Often it is the case that no team is relegated though, as many of the lower league teams do not have the necessary license to play in the top league. As a result of this you’ll find that a lot of bookies don’t offer the outright relegation market.
