Bundesliga Football Tips: 23rd & 24th May 2020
I was a bit disappointed with my lack of return last week. I think perhaps for the first set of fixtures in a while, I was a little too clever with the predictions and rather than being more general, and backing say a Dortmund win, I went a bit too specific and paid the price.
Anyway… it’s not all bad news as is looking like we could see the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga back in action in June – can’t wait for that.
With last weekends results in mind I am going to be a bit more careful with this set of tips and perhaps take the lower odds on offer for some bets, if it means I have a greater chance of landing them.
We have some cracking games to look forward to this weekend including two top six clashes as Borussia Moenchengladbach face Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg host Borussia Dortmund.
Don’t forget… there is a midweek set of games next week (including Dortmund’s clash with Bayern Munich) so do keep your eyes peeled for that extra midweek tips article on Tuesday.
Football Tips: Saturday 23rd May
I felt Borussia Moenchengladbach were one of the outstanding performers of the first weekend of action in Bundesliga for a while last weekend. A 3-1 win at Frankfurt and two goals in the opening ten minutes of the game was the perfect start for a team that now lie in third position in the table, having leapfrogged Red Bull Leipzig last weekend.
Leverkusen also have the added disadvantage of having had two days fewer to prepare for this game having played on Monday night away to Bremen. Ahead of that game, Leverkusen had been in outstanding form of late which had pushed them back into Champions League place contention.
For me, these are two well-matched sides, but I do feel that the home time just about has the edge. They have scored more goals, they looked more dangerous last week, and I feel defensively, they are also slightly stronger, although they have conceded more goals than Bayer this season. This will be a close one, but I am backing Borussia to land a narrow win, most probably by a 2-1 scoreline.
I have to say I was hugely impressed with the ease with which Dortmund won last weekend’s Reiverderby with Schalke 04. A 4-0 win against your most fierce local rival was as commanding as it sounds and they will head into a tricky couple of games in good spirits and in good form too.
Wolfsburg were also winners last weekend after a fine win over Augsburg on the road. Their form of late has also been impressive and while they are some way off the pace of the top five, there is enough to suggest from this team that they could well be serious contenders once again next season.
That said, I still think Dortmund are the better team and crucially, I also feel they have a far greater squad in terms of quality and depth. As players regain fitness that will start to matter less, but for now it is a big advantage and as such, while I can see Wolfsburg scoring a goal, I still feel Dortmund take the win in this one.
The last time these two teams met in Frankfurt, Bayern emerged as thumping winners and in truth, having witnessed both these teams performances last weekend in full, I can’t really see any viable hope for Frankfurt to achieve anything less than a similar result on Saturday evening.
Bayern are incredibly strong at home and at the moment, they are flying. They picked up where they left off with yet another win away to Union Berlin last weekend, a game they totally controlled from start to finish. Frankfurt, on the other hand, went behind after 38 seconds against Borussia Moenchengladbach and were 2-0 down inside 10 minutes. That does not bode well ahead of this trip to Bavaria.
There is no doubt Frankfurt’s decision to offload a couple of their key players from last season has had a massive impact on this team. In attack, they look toothless at times and as such, I can see Bayern picking them apart at will. I expect the home side to win this one and win it very comfortably indeed.
Bundesliga Tips: Sunday 24th May
I’ll admit that this is a risky call, especially when you consider Leipzig won the match between these two teams at home 8-0 back in November, but from what I saw last weekend, the fire seems to have gone out of the Red Bull belly at the moment. While not being beaten that often (just three defeats all season) a run of five draws in seven games has seen them drop off the pace at the top of the Bundesliga.
What is more worrying is that their performances in these games have been uninspiring for the most part and they were labouring to a somewhat fortunate draw last weekend against Freiburg, a team that are not particularly known for their strength on the road.
Mainz are still struggling but they will take heart from a battling draw earned after being 2-0 down away to Cologne last weekend and I think that performance will put them in good spirits for this game. Being at home will be a plus and they will want a degree of revenge for that heavy defeat in Leipzig in November and as such, I am backing them to cause a bit of an upset here and earn a point.
