Champions League Final Tips: Liverpool v Tottenham

Champions League TipsThe biggest club football game in the world takes place Saturday night and obviously I’m covering the action!

Liverpool, beaten by Real Madrid in last year’s final in Kyiv, are back to try and claim their sixth Champions League success.

They will face a Tottenham side seeking their first trophy of any kind since 2008 and their first European trophy since the 1980s.

A three-week break since the end of the Premier League season means that Roberto Firmino of Liverpool and Harry Kane of Tottenham have both managed to recover from injury to play in the final if selected.

Lets see if we can get one final winner to end the season on a high…

Key Stats
  • Both teams struggled in the group stage, both pipping Italian teams, Napoli and Inter Milan to make it into the Knockout phase of the competition.
  • Both also produced remarkable comebacks in the semi’s, Liverpool beating Barca 4-3 & Spurs earning a 3-3 draw with Ajax after being 3-0 down.
  • In the two Premier League games between the two teams this season, Liverpool have won both by the same 2-1 scoreline.
  • The teams have met in Europe once before in the 1973 UEFA Cup, which finished 2-2 on aggregate, but Liverpool won thanks to a single away goal.

Liverpool finished 26 points clear of Tottenham in the Premier League this season and they also did the double over Tottenham in the league. Spurs therefore will start this game as the underdogs despite their heroics in reaching the final following their stunning comeback against Ajax.

My worry for Spurs is that they have gone to the well in this tournament many times already this season. They scraped through the group stage thanks to a draw against an under-strength Barcelona side while Inter falted against PSV Eindhoven, they scraped through against Manchester City thanks to a couple of key VAR decisions going their way in both legs and a 96th minute injury time leveller gave them the win against Ajax on away goals.

I don’t think you can keep going to the well in games like this time and time again and expect to come out on top. Liverpool have had their share of luck, beating Napoli to reach the knockout phase and then brilliantly coming back from 3-0 down in the first leg to beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield, but I feel they have not been as stretched and drained as Spurs have in this competition.

Add to that Liverpool’s experiences in Europe over the years under Klopp, where they have reached two previous European finals in the past three seasons and I think the Reds will get the trophy that their season has deserved.

Liverpool to win & both teams to score - £10 returns £39.00
