Champions League Final Tips & Predictions: 23rd August
This Sunday sees the end of a long season for European football’s top teams, just a couple of weeks before the season kicks off once again in earnest.
Paris St Germain, who have claimed the domestic treble in their native France, will take on Bayern Munich, who have already completed the German League and Cup double in what promises to be an exciting final.
Paris St Germain have been on a fine run of form themselves, losing just once in their last 31 games to reach their first ever Champions League Final. The return to fitness of star striker Kylian Mbappe and the return from suspension of Angel Di Maria were crucial to the team in their fine 3-0 win over Red Bull Leipzig in the semifinal.
However, they will face the juggernaut that Bayern Munich have become under head coach Hansi Flick. After losing 5-1 away to Eintracht Frankfurt last winter, Nico Kovac was sacked and Bayern’s own Herr Flick took over at the helm, initially on a caretaker basis. However, since then, Bayern have rampaged through the Bundesliga, DFP Pokal and Champions League racking up 28 wins in their last 29 games, scoring 97 goals in those games alone.
The Germans have also won every one of the Champions League games they have played this season, including all six League Stage games, victory home and away against Chelsea then wins over Barcelona and Lyon to reach the final.
It is a battle of the two form teams in Europe at the moment and it will be one that football lovers all around the world will be tuning in to enjoy. Let’s now take a look at the tips I have put together in this special article for the Champions League Final.
Champions League Final Tips: Bayern Munich v Paris St Germain
How is it possible to pick between two teams in such great form? Well, while the bookies have gone very hot on Bayern Munich to win this game, I don’t think it is quite so straightforward as that. In the game with Lyon, the French side wasted three glorious chances before Bayern opened the scoring and they are the kind of chances that the likes of Neymar and Mbappe in particular would snatch up.
However, once Bayern took the lead against Lyon, the game was effectively over as despite the French side putting up a brave resistance, Bayern always had the game in total control once Serge Gnabry’s fine strike hit the back of the net.
For PSG to have a chance here I think they are going to have to take every chance they get in the Bayern half and that is not going to be easy against a side that have conceded just 12 goals in their last 29 games. However, if any two players could do it, then Mbappe and Neymar are as likely as any others.
For me though, what tips this towards a Bayern win is that the German side have so many ways to win this game, pace in wide areas, creativity in midfield, a striker in the form of his career who has netted 56 goals this season. Midfielders who crop up with key goals. It is this range of ways to win a game that I think tips the scales in favour of Bayern here, however it is a game I think will be stacked with goals and chances.
