Champions League Quarter-Final Tips: 6th & 7th April
The Champions League returns to action this week with the first legs of the four quarter-final ties taking place across Europe.
We managed a £5 profit at the weekend, which was better than nothing, and we’ve had some decent results in this competition recently so I’m hoping these tips will be a good set.
It’s a cracking line up of fixtures to get stuck into. We have two repeat finals of recent times, Real Madrid v Liverpool and Bayern Munich v Paris St Germain, to look forward to along with Man City v Dortmund and Chelsea v FC Porto.
Here’s how I see the action playing out…
Champions League Tips: Tuesday 6th April
Well, what can we say about this game? First off, Neither of these teams have a great record at this stage of the competition of late, so one of them has to buck that trend in order to reach the semifinals of the competition.
For me, City are the clear pick to do that. Pep Guardiola’s dreams have usually ended at this stage of the competition in previous years, but I feel they have the quality to beat Dortmund and progress quite comfortably. Their form is excellent, the team is in form and they look hungry to add more titles to their inevitable Premier League win that looms on the horizon.
Dortmund’s form in the Bundesliga has been abysmal this season, but in stark contrast to that they have been very solid in the Champions League. However, I would add a caveat here and say that I think that run has been built on some pretty weak opposition and City are an altogether different prospect to the likes of Club Brugge and Sevilla.
I can see that hugely impressive Dortmund attack scoring a goal against City here. Dortmund are hard to keep from scoring in any game, but I also feel City can have plenty of joy against Dortmund’s defence and as such, I am backing the English side to land a very strong win here by a 3-1 or even 4-1 scoreline.
Will revenge be on Liverpool’s mind after their Loris Karius-inspired defeat to Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final? The Reds recent record against Real isn’t great, losing all three games, but it is worth noting that the only time they met over two legs, Liverpool were rampant 5-0 winners on aggregate, winning both legs and handing Real their biggest ever 2-leg defeat in the Champions League.
The Reds looked back to their best against Arsenal at the weekend coming away with a 3-0 win over the Gunners, but Real will certainly be able to test their inexperienced and untried centre back pairing at this level and in truth, it is that factor which has turned me against a Liverpool win here, despite the Reds away form being stronger of late.
Real are always tough to beat at home and while they have slipped up at times this season in this competition, most notably against Shakhtar Donetsk, they have done just enough in most games to land the victory.
I can see that being the case here, but I think it will be a close one and I fancy Liverpool to score here. As such, I think 2-1 is a very good correct score bet here especially at the odds quoted.
Football Tips: Wednesday 7th April
I have to admit and say that last year’s final between these two teams was a bit of an anticlimax for me. I did expect a much more exciting game than the one we actually saw and though Bayern, deservedly in my view, ran out winners, I think this time around things could be slightly different over the two legs.
The German side have landed a huge win over Red Bull Leipzig in the run up to this game which all but locks up yet another Bundesliga title for the German giants. In contrast, PSG are in a real battle at the top of Ligue 1 and lost their last game at home to Lille ahead of this tie.
However, while I am going to pick Bayern to win the home leg, it is notable to me that PSG have scored in 42 of their last 43 Champions League games. Only Bayern have kept them out, but I think the German side are looking more fragile defensively this season and I do fancy PSG to get an away goal.
That may be crucial when it comes to the second leg next week in Paris and I think that this game will finish either 2-1 to Bayern or 3-2 to Bayern, most likely the first scoreline.
FC Porto provided the shock of the last round when they defeated Juventus on away goals to earn a place in the quarterfinals. They now face Chelsea, who knocked out Atletico Madrid by winning both home and away against the Spanish league leaders in what should be an interesting clash between the two.
I was confident, heading into this weekend, that Chelsea would win here, but to see how they were beaten 5-2 by West Brom, albeit after going down to 10-men in the first half, really does give me a few concerns for this game. FC Porto showed their quality against Juventus and I think they’ll fancy their chances of getting a goal here.
However, Thomas Tuchel is a wily coach and he won’t have his Chelsea team make the same mistake again. With 11v11 for the full game, I would still back Chelsea to eke out a narrow win here to take into the home leg.
As such, I think another narrow win, probably by a 2-1 scoreline is on the cards here.
