Champions League Tips: 1st & 2nd October
by David Lenton
I’m not going to lie to you, I was really disappointed with how my first set of Champions League tips went a fortnight or so ago. I clawed a little of the loss back in the Europa League and my winnings in the Premier League have ensured decent results so far this season still, but I don’t like those non-winning days.
So, with that in mind, I am more than determined to make up for that disappointing showing last time out with a very solid and profitable set of tips this time around.
There are some cracking matches to look forward to, including Spurs v Bayern on Tuesday night and a tricky trip to northern France for Chelsea on Wednesday evening as they take on Lille.
Champions League Tips: Tuesday 1st October

Atalanta were surprisingly thumped 4-0 away to Dynamo Zagreb in their opener.
Shakhtar were well beaten at home by Man City, going down to a 3-0 defeat.
The two teams have never met previously.
On average Atalanta concede under a goal a game in European competition.
I’ve gone with this early kick off game on Tuesday because a lot of games that evening are somewhat one-sided and don’t offer the best odds on what I consider to be the most likely outcome of those games. This game, along with the Spurs – Bayern Munich clash, offers about the best value on Tuesday.
I was disappointed and surprised with how poor Atalanta were in their 4-0 loss in Zagreb in their opening game in the group. However, I am prepared to give them a chance as otherwise this season, they have performed very well and sit in third spot in Serie A this season with only Juventus and Napoli in front of them.
Shakhtar were also well beaten by Manchester City in their home game and this heavily Brazilian-based team will be a stern opponent for the Italians. However at home, Atalanta are very tough to beat and this young and exciting team should have the firepower to secure a win by either a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline in my view.

Despite leading 2-0, Tottenham were held 2-2 by Olympiakos in their opening game.
Bayern strolled to a 3-0 win over Red Star Belgrade in Munich in their first match.
The teams have met four times. Bayern winning two, Spurs one with one draw.
This will be the first game between the teams since December 1983.
It’s been a miserable time for Spurs recently, held by Olympiakos despite being 2-0 in front, defeated by Leicester and then knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by Colchester, no wonder that Mauricio Pochettino is feeling the pressure a little, regardless of how they performed over the weekend.
Now they face a Bayern Munich side who won their opener in clinical fashion against Red Star Belgrade and who will know that a positive result here would put them in a great position to win the group.
Bayern earned a 0-0 draw at Liverpool in the Champions League last season, but I can see Spurs scoring in this one, the only problem is that I can also see Bayern scoring too and as such, I think a score draw is the bet to back in this game.
Lille were well beaten 3-0 away to Ajax in their opener.
Chelsea lost at home to Valencia on the opening night 1-0.
These two teams have never played before in European competition.
Callum Hudson Odoi should be back from injury to play a part for Chelsea.
Both these teams need a result after less than stellar starts to their Champions League campaign but I feel the pressure is more on Chelsea having lost one of their home games to Valencia last time around. Frank Lampard’s side are worrying defensively, but they can score plenty of goals and I think it is this that will be the crucial factor here.
Lille haven’t quite started the season in France in the way they finished last season and their performances have been inconsistent. Generally though, they are strong at home and Chelsea are going to have to be at their very best if they are to get the result here.
I do see Lille scoring, perhaps a couple of goals, but by the same token, when Chelsea come forward they look very dangerous and if Callum Hudson-Odoi is fit to add to the young players that have been the nucleus of this team so far this season, I really fancy them to pull off a big win on the road here. They may need three or four goals to win the game, but I really do feel Chelsea can pull it off.
Chelsea to win & both teams to score - £10 returns £40.00
Liverpool lost their opening game in the group 2-0 away to Napoli.
Red Bull were convincing 6-2 winners over Genk in their opener.
The two teams have never met before in European competition.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi will likely miss the game for Liverpool through injury.
Liverpool’s group stage woes on the road continued in Naples last time out, meaning they have lost their last four Group Stage away games in the Champions League. However, they have been imperious at home and that is the task facing a promising and talented Red Bull Salzburg team as they come to Anfield this week.
Salzburg are no mugs. They have been consistently strong performers in the Europa League for a good few seasons now and they will certainly give Liverpool a tough game and I am backing the Austrian side, who smacked six past Genk in their opener, to score a goal at Anfield.
However, I feel that at home, especially on a European night, the holders of the trophy are irrepressible at times and the home fans will certainly be up for this. As such, I expect Liverpool to bounce back from that defeat in Naples and secure a very solid home win here by a 3-1 scoreline.
Liverpool to win & both teams to score - £10 returns £22.50
