Euro 2020 Semi-Final Tips: 6th & 7th July

Author: Published: July 5, 2021

Euro 2020 TipsOverall we were down £2.50 after the four quarter-finals, but in the games that I was a loser on, I felt that on each one I was pretty close, perhaps apart from the England game, where that early goal really settled England down well and they played the best quarter-final I have seen from an England team.

Still, I’m never happy with a loss so I am looking to improve on that with the two semi-final ties which we have coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday evening this week.

First off, we have Spain taking on Italy and then this is followed by the biggest game for England since the 2018 World Cup as they take on Denmark in what looks like being a very tough encounter between two sides very much in form.

Both games kick off at 8pm on their respective days and both are at Wembley, as is the final next Sunday night.

Of course, I’ll be rooting for England to reach their first major tournament final since 1966 and it is going to be interesting to see if Gareth Southgate’s team can take the next step after losing out in the semis of the World Cup and Nations League in 2018 and 2019.

Let’s now take a closer look at both semifinals and give you our tip for each.

Today’s Games

  • Semi-Final – Spain vs Italy (Tuesday 6th July, 8pm, Wembley)
  • Semi-Final – Denmark vs England (Wed 7th July, 8pm, Wembley)

Euro 2020 Semi-Final Tips: Tuesday 6th July

Spain VS Italy
06/07/2021 8:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Spain defeated Switzerland on penalties to reach the semi-finals.
Italy were 2-1 winners over Belgium in their quarter-final tie.
Influential left back Leonardo Spinazzola will miss the game for Italy through injury.
Italy have won just 2 of the last 14 between the teams, Spain winning 7, with 5 draws.

Italy’s sole defeat over Spain since 2012 came at Euro 2016 when they were 2-0 winners in the Round of 16 stage. However, since then Spain drew against Italy in Italy and then beat the Italians 3-0 at home. However, that was before Roberto Mancini took control of his native country and guided them to a new record of 32 games unbeaten.

That record, together with a superb win over Belgium in the last round of the tournament means that I am confident Italy will win this game. Spain for me have not looked anywhere near as clinical as Italy and they have needed extra time and penalties to get the job done in games they should have tied up sooner.

Italy wont allow Spain the time on the ball they want and their high press has worked well against a number of opponents and it is something Spain will be familiar with, so while I can see Spain getting a goal, I just think Italy will grab one more.

I don’t think we will see extra time here as I am backing the Italians to lock up a 2-1 or even 3-1 win in normal time.

Euro 2020 Semi-Final Tips: Wednesday 7th 6th July

Denmark VS England
07/07/2021 8:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

After losing their opening two games, Denmark have won their last 3 to reach the semis.
England defeated Germany and then Ukraine to reach their third semi final in 3 tournaments.
England have not conceded a goal in five Euro 2020 games so far, matching Spain in 2012.
In the 2020 Nations League, the teams drew 0-0 , before Denmark won 1-0 at Wembley.

A little word of warning for England, they have scored just one goal against Denmark in their last three games, and have lost on the last occasion they played Denmark at Wembley, which was only back in October 2020.

The Danes are flying after an awful start to the Euro Finals on so many levels, but since their two defeats against Finland and Belgium, they have won three straight beating Russia, Wales and the Czech Republic to get this far, scoring ten goals in the process and looking very dangerous indeed.

However, after rattling in six goals in the knockout phase without reply, England are also looking very strong and they have the added advantage of having home support at Wembley. That could be a massive boost for Gareth Southgate’s team who are generally very tough to beat on home soil against any opponent.

This won’t be another walk in the park for England like the game with the Ukraine was, Denmark are a much sterner test and I think it will be another tight game, but I am backing England to snatch the victory albeit just by a single goal.
