Euro 2020 Tips R16 – Monday 28th June
We are now at the halfway point of the Round of 16 ties and the quarter-finals are starting to take shape. Of course, for England fans, the games today are just the starter before the main course tomorrow night when we take on Germany at Wembley, but even so there are a couple of cracking games to enjoy today.
In truth, the first of the two games looks like being the best in terms of entertainment. Croatia, a side still blessed with so many talented players but who are lacking a bit of pace, take on a Spain side who struggled in their opening two games, but found their form in the last game, hammering hapless Slovakia 5-0.
Even so, that wasn’t enough to put the Spanish top of the table and they are now in the half of the draw that includes Belgium, Portugal, France and Italy. That does promise us some very tasty clashes in the quarter-final stages and beyond of this tournament.
The second game tonight sees France taking on Switzerland with the French having been held to draws in their last two games after that narrow win in Germany. The Swiss can’t match the French for talent or pace, but they are pragmatic, tough to beat and do have a habit of causing upset wins against favourites in tournaments.
Let’s take a look at my tips for the fifth and sixth games of the Round of 16.
- Round of 16 – Croatia V Spain (5pm, Copenhagen)
- Round of 16 – France V Switzerland (8pm, Bucharest)

Euro 2020 Round of 16 Tips: Monday 28th June
Both of these teams are, to my mind at least, very much in a state of transition. Spain struggled in their opening two games, drawing both at home in Seville before they handed Slovakia a 5-0 thrashing, albeit with the help of some awful Slovakian defending in that game.
Croatia’s ageing squad probably has one final hurrah in this tournament and though they beat Scotland last time out, that was their first win in five games and I think it is easy to perhaps read too much into that win and suggest that Croatia could give the Spaniards a tough time here.
For me, Croatia like to dominate possession and control the game that way. Spain won’t allow them to do that with their midfield and with Spain dominating the game, I don’t see Croatia having the pace on the counter attack to hurt the Spaniards.
As such, I think Spain will win this game, but I can see Croatia pushing hard late on and maybe grabbing a consolation but I do feel this has the look of a 2-1 or even 3-1 win for the Spanish.
The French won’t underestimate the task facing them against the Swiss. In four of their last five games between the two, the Swiss have held France to a draw, three of those matches, including the most recent in the 2016 European Championships, finishing in a 0-0 scoreline.
The Swiss’ team style of play and France’s current form, does suggest that there are not going to be a huge amount of goals in this one as there was in the 2014 World Cup when France beat the Swiss 5-2 in Brazil. I think this will be a much tighter affair between the teams, but you can’t overlook France for the victory here.
I am sure that at some point in the game the likes of Pogba, Griezmann, Benzema and Mbappe will be able to create a couple of clear cut chances for the French and if they do, I am pretty confident that one or two of those will be taken.
I can only see another glaring mistake by Hugo Lloris being the way the Swiss will score in this game, but I can’t see that happening two games in a row. As such, I am backing France to win this one either 1-0 or 2-0.
