Euro 2020 Tips R16 – Sunday 27th June
The round of 16 continues today after kicking off on Saturday and there’s no doubt that tournament is really starting to hot up (if only England would follow suit).
Today we have two very interesting games, the in form Netherlands face a Czech Republic side who they don’t have the best record against and who will feel more at home in Budapest than the Dutch will.
Then later on this evening we have a real super-clash as top rated nation in the FIFA rankings Belgium take on the current Henri Delauney Trophy holders Portugal in a game that pits Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva against Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku.
These should be two cracking games and here are my tips for today’s action.
- Round of 16 – Wales v Denmark (5pm, Amsterdam)
- Round of 16 – Italy V Austria (8pm, London)

Euro 2020 Round of 16 Tips: Saturday 26th June
These two teams have met twice before in European Championship Finals game, in 2000, the Dutch won 1-0 on home soil, but four years later, the Czech Republic gained revenge with an exciting 3-2 win in one of the very best games of Euro 2004.
After a very solid trio of performance in their group, the Netherlands will be confident here, but that will be mixed with a bit of caution as their record against the Czech’s isn’t great and they lost the last two games they played against them, home and away, when failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup Finals.
The Czechs were narrowly beaten by England in their final game and ended up fourth in Group D, but they have enough quality to cause the Netherlands a few problems. I fancy them to score a goal, but I still feel that this Dutch team has just enough quality, especially in midfield and in attack, to get the job done in normal time.
I have to admit that I am really looking forward to this game and when you consider the attacking talent on both teams, I think football purists will be hoping for a fantastic encounter involving some of the best attacking players on the planet.
Cristiano Ronaldo has netted five goals already in this tournament and he has fired Portugal into the knockout phase. However, he will face a Belgium side that has an array of hugely talented players with the likes of Lukaku, the Hazard brothers, Tielemans, Mertens and De Bruyne.
There is a good reason that Belgium are ranked as the top team in world football at the moment by FIFA and while they have slipped up at times in major tournaments, I think they will have learned from that and be ready for anything that Portugal can throw at them here.
Of course, any team with Cristiano Ronaldo in not to mention Joao Felix, Diego Jota, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes should score a goal, but I just see Belgium as having too much firepower for the Portuguese to handle in much the same way Germany did when beating them 4-2 in the group stage. I am backing Belgium to win this one but it should be a cracking game.
