Europa League Final Tips – Wednesday 29th May

Europa League TipsI am sure I am not the only one that thinks this game should never have been played in Baku.

The fact Arsenal had to leave Henrik Mkhitaryan at home due to the political situation between Azerbaijan and Armenia is absolutely unfair on the player and the team and is a sad indictment of how UEFA operates to the sound only of cash being filtered into their accounts.

Add to that the fact that these are two London rivals and are based just a few miles apart, and there are any number of venues that would have been far more convenient.

That said, I still feel that this could be a great final.

Neither of these sides are in particularly good form, both are scoring goals but also leaking them defensively and both have this trophy to play for to finish off the season. Chelsea have earned Champions League qualification for finishing third in the Premier League but Arsenal need to win the trophy to earn a place in that competition next season.

Key Stats
  • Both sides made it through the group stage with 16 points from 6 games. Both scored 12 goals at that stage, Arsenal conceding two to Chelsea’s three.
  • Chelsea beat Malmo, Dynamo Kiev, Slavia Prague and Frankfurt to reach the final. Arsenal beat BATE, Rennes, Napoli and Valencia to earn their spot.
  • Arsenal must win the game to earn a Champions League place next season. Chelsea have already qualified for that competition by virtue of finishing third in the table.
  • In the two Premier League games between the teams this season, Chelsea beat Arsenal 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, with Arsenal running out 2-0 victors at the Emirates Stadium.
Analysis:

A quick look at the stats reveals that there is little to choose between these two teams. Chelsea edged Arsenal in terms of performance in the Premier League but it is fair to say that both teams better performances in the last weeks of the season came in European competition. The league games between the teams saw the spoils shared, with one win apiece and on paper, both teams look the match of the other.

I think both sides weakest spots are defensively and both are solid in attack. Eden Hazard will likely be playing his last game for Chelsea and there’s no doubt he would like to leave the club on a high, but Arsenal have Unai Emery as their manager, a man who has won this trophy more times than any other manager in recent history.

The fact that this game between two London rivals is being played so far away, so late at night (local time) is ridiculous and reeks of UEFA accepting a big cheque to host the final there. By all accounts, the stadium may not even be full for the game, which would be a pity as both teams deserve better.

I think this will be an open, attacking and entertaining game and I can see both sides scoring a goal or maybe two. However, I just think that Unai Emery’s best performances have come in this competition over the years and I am backing Arsenal to end up as the winners by the odd goal.
