FA Cup Fourth Round Tips: 23rd & 24th January
It’s FA Cup time this weekend and I’m looking forward to a break from trying to pick what’s going to happen in the Premier League as it’s been tough the last few weeks.
I’ve hit some, but not enough for me to be happy with how they have performed.
There’s been some mitigating circumstances in that, last week for example, I got the results nailed on but went for BTTS, which didn’t happen.
This week though is the FA Cup Fourth Round, and I am hoping that I can have a better and more profitable week here. There are a few interesting matches taking place including three all-Premier League clashes (Fulham v Burnley, plus two games we have tipped, Southampton v Arsenal and the big one on Sunday, Manchester United v Liverpool).
I’ve picked two other games between Premier League sides and lower league teams too, both of which will be shown live on TV and while they don’t offer huge returns, I still feel that the picks have an excellent chance of coming good for me.
Let’s take a look at my tips for FA Cup Fourth Round weekend.
Football Predictions: Saturday 23rd January
One thing stood our markedly in my analysis for this game and that was the fact that neither team concedes that many goals at the moment. Southampton have kept clean sheets in four of their last five, Arsenal in all of their last five games, which means that the BTTS bet looks a non-starter.
I was tempted to go with the Win to Nil option but I liked the odds on a straight Arsenal win. Mikel Arteta’s team won this competition last season somewhat surprisingly, defeating Man City in the semis and Chelsea in the final. I think the Arsenal manager will have focused on this competition again this season too.
Southampton are no pushovers at home though and I can’t see this being a game where plenty of goals are scored. It may take a goal on the counter to make the breakthrough and with the speed of Arsenal’s attacking players and how they play, I think they are just about the more likely of the two teams to do that.
As such, I am backing a close, hard fought game between two well matched teams who are side by side in the Premier League, but I am just backing Arsenal’s extra attacking quality to be decisive.
These two teams have not met that often and they have enjoyed somewhat differing fortunes in recent years. The historic record therefore is not that useful to us, save to note that West Ham have not lost against Doncaster for almost 64 years.
Doncaster are flying high in League One at the moment, lying fourth in the table but with a game in hand which could move them top of the table if they were to win it by enough goals. So they won’t be any pushovers here, even at the London Stadium.
However, West Ham are in great form at the moment. Defensively they look very solid indeed and they are not conceding many goals even against Premier League quality opposition. That makes this look like an incredibly tough ask for the lower league side.
I don’t think West Ham will run up a big score here, but I think a 1-0 or 2-0 win is the likely outcome, hence I have boosted the odds by backing the Win to Nil option here.
FA Cup Fourth Round Tips: Sunday 24th January
It is fair to say that these two teams have not really played many classic encounters of late and last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Anfield was a prime example of that. Liverpool dominated possession but United had the better of the chances and will feel perhaps they should have won the game based on that alone.
I also can’t see either manager making masses of changes for this game. The rivalry between the teams is such that fans demand a win whenever they face off, in any competition. So I can’t see either manager playing a severely weakened team in this game.
Even so, with Liverpool’s away form being what it is in the Premier League at the moment (2 wins from 9 games is a poor return from the Champions), I do feel that the edge is with United at the moment, especially after that win away to Fulham in midweek.
Again, last week I got burned when predicting the draw (which happened) but with both teams to score (which didn’t), so I have kept things simple here and just backed United to win the game.
These two teams have not met that often recently, though Everton did win a Carabao Cup clash back in September 2019 by a 2-0 scoreline at Goodison. Sheffield Wednesday were deducted points at the start of the season which is why they remain near the bottom of the Championship table but they have won three of their last four games, drawing the other.
However, even without that points deduction, they would be 20th in the table only and that suggests to me a team that is going to struggle against an Everton side that have won four of their last five and who have a good record at Goodison Park in general.
The Toffee’s weren’t that great in beating Rotherham last time out and I can see them shipping a goal against a dangerous Wednesday attack, but I think they’ll have learned from that narrow win and put in a more solid performance here.
As I said, I can see the owls scoring a goal, but I feel it will be a consolation with Everton winning the game 3-1 or something along those lines.
