FA Cup Quarter-Final Tips : 20th & 21st March
After a good weekend last time out we made solid profit in the Champions League but drew blank in the Europa League on Thursday.
All totalled up we are still in profit on the week coming into the weekend which is exactly where I like to be!
I’m focussing on the FA Cup ties this weekend as these four games on Saturday and Sunday take on even greater significance now as a win here will guarantee the winner of another trip to Wembley to contest the semi-finals.
The matches see seven Premier League sides, a good number of them being in the top six, taking on just one team from outside the division in Championship side Bournemouth, who were a Premier League side until their relegation last season.
All the games will be played to a conclusion, with extra time and penalties used to decide the winner on the day as has been the case throughout the competition this year.
Check out my tips below.
FA Cup Tips: Saturday 20th March
Although these two teams have been seen as rivals, they have not actually played that many times in the past, just 31 times in total and Southampton lead the way with 14 wins to Bournemouth’s 8 with 9 games drawn between the two.
However, there has been just one FA Cup meeting between the two, which came back in 1953 and Bournemouth ran out 3-1 winners in that tie, in a replay after the first game was drawn 1-1. The Cherries wins have been somewhat scarce over the years, with just three wins in this game since 1958.
However, Southampton’s recent form in the Premier League is a huge concern for me. They do seem to be a team that if they go a goal down, seem to implode and look likely to concede many more. I feel Bournemouth are well placed to take advantage of this, especially on home soil.
I do feel this will be tight and I think goals may be at a premium in this once, hence I am not going for a both teams to score bet, but instead I am going to back Bournemouth to land a win here and claim a semifinal spot.
Manchester City may have seen their winning run of games brought to an end by Manchester United a couple of weeks back, but since then they have got back to winning ways both domestically and in Europe and they look odds on favourite to land the Premier League title by a comfortable margin this season.
Everton have enjoyed a good season and lie seventh in the table, but their Achilles heel has been their home form as they have lost seven times at home in the league. That series of defeats includes a defeat to today’s opponents in the Premier League already this season.
There’s no doubt that Everton fans are desperate for the Carlo Ancelotti era to be more than just the occasional good result over a decent team. Silverware is a must but I think the draw has been a little unkind to them on this occasion.
City are just too good, too strong and have too much strength in depth for most teams at the moment and I think they will win this one to move into the semifinals and keep their quadruple hopes alive.
Football Tips: Sunday 21st March
I think these clubs are probably the polar opposites of each other at the moment. On the one hand we have Chelsea who are flying under Thomas Tuchel. They have conceded just three goals since he took over from Frank Lampard and they have moved into 4th in the Premier League as well as the Champions League quarter-finals.
In contrast, Chris Wilder has walked out on Sheffield United after a series of disagreements with the board over player recruitment and a lack of support, the club sit at the foot of the table with no realistic prospect of avoiding the drop and their form sees them winning just one of the last five games.
In addition the Blades have had a relatively easy passage into the quarter-finals so far but they will find the step up in class against Tuchel’s Chelsea a massive gap for them to bridge and it is one that they have not looked like doing so this season.
This is a nice easy one for me, I think Chelsea win this easily but finding a good value bet was very difficult as the home side are so much the favourites here. As such, I have backed Chelsea to win this one 2-0 as a correct score bet.
A quick look at the Premier League table would suggest that this game should be a very close contest between the two teams. However, if you then go and look at the historic record between the two, especially the more recent contests and Leicester fans have every right to be a little concerned at their chances.
In the last 25 games between the two, Leicester have won just once, a 5-3 home win in the season they won the league title. United have won 19 of those contests and they have also tasted victory in eight of the last ten between the two teams.
I do feel Leicester missing Harvey Barnes and Justin James is a massive blow to them as the pace and energy both of these players possess is a key factor in Leicester’s play. Add to that Manchester United’s fearsome away record, where they have not lost away from home in the EPL this season, and it doesn’t add much more good news for Leicester fans.
I do think Leicester will score a goal and it will be a close game in all likelihood but I do feel that United will prevail and march on into the semifinals.
