Football Betting Tips: 12th, 13th & 14th September
Well we’re back at it already for the new season and given the current climate I’m pretty sure most will welcome the distraction of football returning to our screens.
My first set of football tips for the new season span Saturday-Monday, September 12th-14th, and include some intriguing match-ups in what is set to be an even more intriguing year.
Note: you can check out my league and cup winner predictions for this season here.
There are only eight games this weekend due to the fact both Manchester clubs have been given extra time to prepare for the season.
For the other 16 teams in the Premier League it is a chance to get off to a good start and there are some cracking games to enjoy in particular Tottenham’s clash with Everton on Sunday, Champions Liverpool facing off against Championship winners Leeds United at Anfield and on Monday night, Frank Lampard’s expensively assembled Chelsea squad will head to Brighton for their season opener.
Premier League Tips: Saturday 12th September
I thought this season would be a good chance for Palace to move Roy Hodgson into a director of football role and pass the mantle onto a new manager with new ideas, as Palace had gone a little stale of late, but Hodgson remains in charge for the season opener with Southampton although I am not sure it is a good move.
Eze’s arrival should give Palace a fresh attacking option but he is not proven in the Premier League as yet and Palace’s form towards the end of last season was shocking. I don’t really see much evidence that they can turn that on its head and get a result here against a Southampton side whose form at the end of last season was very good in comparison.
After a torrid start to last season, Ralph Hassenhutl turned things around at the Saints and led them to a relatively safe mid-table finish and I can see them kicking on from here as I think they have the makings of a decent side.
This will be a battle but I still feel Southampton are the better of the two teams and as such, I am backing them to land the win here.
Newcastle have a pretty decent record over West Ham in recent times and last season after a 3-2 win at the London Stadium, the teams shared a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park, which was a vital result in helping West Ham stay up in the final shake up.
However, with few signings of note on either team other than Callum Wilson, I can’t see this game being particularly different to the encounters last season, which is no bad thing given that both of these games were packed with drama and saw a total of 9 goals scored across the two games in total.
I do think David Moyes will have been drilling the importance of not conceding into his West Ham defenders though and I think we will see them tighten up. The problem with that is that they tend to become a bit toothless in attack and against a decent Newcastle defence that is a problem.
I can’t really split these two teams at the moment, this is a game that could go any of the three possible ways but my gut instinct here is that this one will finish in either a 0-0 or 1-1 draw, which I don’t think would be a bad result for either team.
Football Betting Tips: Sunday 13th September
The big question for Everton fans about this game is whether James Rodriguez will start this fixture. The Colombian ace could be a great buy for Everton but whether he signed in time to be realistically ready for this game remains unknown.
Jose Mourinho’s business this summer has been solid rather than spectacular with Matt Doherty, Joe Hart and Pierre Hojbjerg coming in. He will miss Jan Vertonghen, who has left the club for Benfica, but other than that all of Spurs’ key men, including Harry Kane and Seong Hyeon Min all remain at the club.
Spurs have a fantastic record against Everton over the years and have not lost a game against them since 2012 and in truth, even if Rodriguez does sign for the Toffees and can play and is fully fit, I would still feel that Spurs are going to have too much for them.
Jose Mourinho will want to see more from his Spurs team this season after a disappointing time of it last year in many respects and I can see them getting off to a solid start here. Back Everton to get a consolation but Spurs to run out comfortable 3-1 winners.
Monday Night Football Tips: September 14th
These two teams have only played each other 14 times over the years and that is goo dnews for Brighton fans as they have beaten Chelsea just once, in the very first game between the teams back in 1933.
Chelsea had been on an 11-game winning streak over Brighton, stretching back to February 1967, up until last season when the teams drew 1-1 at the AMEX. That result ended that run and gave Brighton their first ever point against Chelsea in the Premier League, or indeed in their history (their only other win was an FA Cup win, and their draw was also in the FA Cup).
Brighton have made some astute signings this season on their limited budget and I think Lallana and Dendoncker will add some real quality to midfield and I think that the Seagulls could perhaps grab a goal against a Chelsea defence that has been leaky at times.
However, with a new left back and centre back in Chilwell and Thiago Silva, plus Havertz, Ziyech and Werner boosting their attacking options alongside Pulisic, Mount, Hudson-Odoi and Abraham, I am expecting big things from Chelsea this season and as such I would back them to win here probably by a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline.
