Football Betting Tips: 5th & 6th May

Football Tips & PredictionsIt is the penultimate weekend of the Premier League with many teams playing their 37th game of a long and hard season.

It may be crucial as depending on how results go, a place in the top four and which teams will be relegated could well be in the balance come next weekend, although if results go a different way, we may well know which teams finish top four and in the bottom three before next week’s matches even get underway.

I’m hoping to finish my season in style with my weekend football tips and predictions for Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May.

Key Stats
  • Stoke City are 19th, three points from safety and with a much worse goal difference than the nearest safe team (Swansea City). A win therefore is vital.
  • Crystal Palace are now a lofty 11th position in the league with 38 points from their 36 games played and need just one more point to be mathematically sure of survival.
  • The teams met back in November when a late Mamadou Sakho goal in the 92nd minute handed Palace a much needed 2-1 win over the Potters.
  • The teams met back in November when a late Mamadou Sakho goal in the 92nd minute handed Palace a much needed 2-1 win over the Potters.
Analysis:

It’s now win or bust for Stoke City boss Paul Lambert and his team. Three draws on the bounce have stopped a run of defeats but have seen them lose ground on teams above them and with just two games left compared to three for their rivals above them, this means Stoke really need two wins to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

The matter is exacerbated by them having the worst goal difference in the Premier League (-33), which is five worse than the next best team. That essentially means another point for their rivals and means any win for them in their next three games will likely down Stoke, even if City win their last two games.

The other problem is Stoke now face a Crystal Palace side brimming with confidence after their 5-0 home win over Leicester last week moved them up into 11th in the table. Oddly enough Palace are not mathematically safe, they need one more point, but avoid defeat here and Roy Hodgson will have performed a miracle to save the team he took over pointless after seven games.

I think that is precisely that as Stoke have battled hard recently but concede too many soft goals. I think this yet another game that has a draw written large all over it.

Key Stats
  • Bournemouth are not yet mathematically safe with 38 points from their 36 games but one more point will make the Cherries secure in the Premier League for next season.
  • Swansea lie in 17th place just one place and one point above the drop zone. They have only played 35 games, but have a worse goals record than Southampton below them.
  • Neither side have won in their last five games, with Bournemouth losing all of their last three and Swansea achieving just a couple of draws in that time.
  • The teams met in the Premier League back in November 2017 and the result was a rather dour 0-0 draw at the Liberty Stadium.
Analysis:

Bournemouth may just need one point from their remaining games to secure Premier League safety mathematically, but in truth it would take a very odd set of results to see them go down, whereas for Swansea, the situation is now desperate after a poor run of form and Southampton’s win over Bournemouth last week.

The Swans now lie in a precarious 17th place, with a much worse goal difference than the Saints and the two teams meet once again on Tuesday night in what could be a massive relegation decider. However, the Swans will want to go into that game in the strongest possible position.

The problem is, I just don’t see them having the firepower to do that even against a Bournemouth side that has lost all of its last three games. The Swans have netted just 27 times this season and that is the reason why they find themselves so close to the drop zone.

In truth, I think this is a game both sides would not be too disappointed with a point from and it would not surprise me in the slightest if this game is short on quality and peters out into a 0-0 or 1-1 draw.

Key Stats
  • Everton are relatively secure in the Premier league currently sitting in 8th position in the table, four points clear of Leicester in 9th but 6 behind Burnley in 7th.
  • Southampton lie 18th in the table, having played 35 games with 32 points, 1 behind Swansea on 33, Southampton do have a better goal difference however.
  • The Saints inflicted a heavy defeat on Everton when the teams met at St Mary’s back in November, winning that game 4-1.
  • Everton have won three of the last eight between the teams, Southampton four with just one draw in that period (a 1-1 draw at Goodison back in April 2016).
Analysis:

Mary’s especially as it comes on the back of just their second win in 22 Premier League games (a 2-1 win over south coast rivals Bournemouth last week).

That win has given the visitors a lifeline that perhaps they thought they would not have at this point and if any coach can inspire a team to perform above its ability for a couple of games, the spiky Mark Hughes is arguably as good as any for a team in this position.

Everton though are strong at home under Sam Allardyce and they won’t want to let that form slip and with signs that signings Walcott and Tosun are starting to form an understanding, the Saints won’t have it easy here at Goodison Park.

That said, I think the Saints know that they have to get something from this game and as such, I am expecting a big performance from them. I don’t think they can win here, but I do feel they’ll do enough to get a point.

Football Betting Tips: Sunday 6th May

Chelsea

Liverpool

Liverpool

Key Stats
  • Liverpool currently lie third in the Premier League table with 72 points from 36 games. Their goal difference is massively better than Chelsea’s too.
  • Chelsea lie fifth in the table with 66 points from 35 games this season. Their goal difference is just +26 compared to Spurs +37 and Liverpool’s +43.
  • The teams last met at Anfield back in November when Mo Salah’s strike for Liverpool was cancelled out by Willian’s miss-hit cross to earn Chelsea a point.
  • Chelsea have not beaten Liverpool in the Premier League since November 2014, Liverpool’s last two wins over Chelsea have also both been at Stamford Bridge.
Analysis:

In the end, this game boils down to one thing, Chelsea must win this game in order to stand any chance of claiming a fourth-place spot and even if they do, they are reliant on either Spurs or Liverpool (or both) slipping up in their remaining games, and Chelsea winning all three of theirs, to do so.

That is a big ask as Liverpool face Brighton at home on the final day while Tottenham have West Brom away, followed by two home games against Newcastle and Leicester to get the requisite number of points.

So even if Antonio Conte’s team’s task seems a forlorn one, they’ll want to continue their good form here and against a Liverpool side that could well feature a few changes, especially if they have reached the Champions League Final from their trip to Rome in midweek, although to be fair, Jurgen Klopp has resisted making wholesale changes to his team thus far.

Even so, I fancy the home side to take the game to Liverpool here but I can see the Reds scoring, however I am backing Eden Hazard to inspire Chelsea to a narrow win here.
