Football Tips & Predictions: 19th, 20th & 21st September
Not the best set of results last weekend but the last tip brought up back to very close to even (-£6 overall).
The first week of the season can be a bit of a nightmare when it comes to tipping results as you can never see how teams have progressed or regressed since last season until they finally get into action and get a few games under their belt…
That’s my excuse!
I learnt a great deal from the games I watched last weekend (which was pretty much all of them).
- Liverpool’s defence is worryingly shaky
- Leeds United look like being an entertaining addition to the Premier League
- Everton’s progress under Carlo Ancelotti looks to be hugely impressive.
- Leicester look strong despite losing some key players.
- Arsenal are stronger than last year and Arteta is finally starting to shape the team.
With the above in mind here are my tips for this weekend in the Premier League across Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Premier League Tips: Saturday 19th September
I have to admit to being very impressed with Leeds United last weekend. They gave the Champions a real run for their money and but for some poor judgement for the final penalty decision, they would have earned a point from that game, which their performance really merited. They will certainly prove to be a threat to many teams if they can keep that level of performance up this season.
In contrast, I was sorely disappointed with Fulham in their game with Arsenal. They looked slow, ponderous with the ball and never really threatened to get in behind an Arsenal back line that does seem to be much improved but which Fulham never really tested in any great amount.
Fulham’s problem last time in the Premier League was creativity and in truth, I can’t see how this current team is going to be any better in that respect, especially against the bigger teams and in truth I think they’ll struggle against Leeds here today.
For me this looks like a good solid home win but I am backing the Londoners to grab a consolation in what for me is likely to be a 3-1 win for the home side.
Last weekend was one of great contrast for both these teams. For Arsenal fans it was one of celebration as they landed a superb 3-0 win over Fulham in a game in which they looked fluid, inventive, dangerous when they came forward and unexpectedly solid at the back, albeit against a Fulham side that offered limited options going forward.
In contrast, I felt West Ham’s old problems were all too evident in their 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle and David Moyes will know that his job will be under pressure unless his team can pick up their performance levels quickly, as a relegation battle once again is not what the Hammers fans or board are expecting this season.
The problem for me for West Ham is that they seem a club divided and with little direction. In contrast, Arsenal seem to be galvanised under Mikkel Arteta and now seem to be on the right road and as such, I think they are big favourites here.
West Ham failed to score in their game with Newcastle last week and I don’t think they are going to have any joy here against Arsenal’s new look back line and I think the Gunners will win this one very comfortably.
Football Betting Tips: Sunday 20th September
It is fair to say that Chelsea were more than a little fortunate against Brighton on Monday night. The Seagulls missed two glorious chances, while Chelsea took all of theirs in style to claim a 3-1 win on the road at tha AMEX to get the season off to a winning start.
At Anfield, Liverpool were given a real test defensively by Leeds United, who became the latest team to score three at Anfield, after Chelsea did so in losing 5-3 against the Reds in a remarkable game between the teams towards the end of last season. A game that sparked a fierce row between both managers on the touchline.
The Reds do not have a great record at Stamford Bridge over the years and were knocked out of the FA Cup there last season and given their recent performances defensively, allied to the new players that Chelsea have brought in to add to an already talented squad, and I do feel that the visitors may struggle here.
Liverpool may have only lost four games over the last two Premier League seasons as a whole, but defensively I am worried at how open they are and how many individual errors are creeping into their play. As such, I am backing Chelsea to win this one probably by a 2-1 scoreline.
Monday Night Football Tips: September 21st
Wolves trip to Sheffield United on Monday night ended in a confident 2-0 win for the visitors thanks to two early goals from Jiminez and Saiss followed by a hard-working defensive display to keep the Blades out and earn the three points.
In contrast, Manchester City were preparing themselves for this game last week as City were given dispensation to kick off the season a week later than other teams due to their late involvement in the Champions League last season. However, they won’t thank the fixture list for giving them a very tough away day as their opening game.
Wolves won this fixture last season with Adama Traore and Raul Jiminez playing a big part in both those wins and I think to stand any chance of a repeat performance, both these players are going to have to play big roles for the home side.
However, City rarely make the same mistake twice, let alone three times and I think that the visitors will have learned from last season and although I do feel they will concede, I also think that they will still run out winners.
