Premier League Tips – 13th & 14th August

Author: Published: August 12, 2022

Premier League TipsOn the positive side of things, we got off to a profitable start last week with £12.10 banked in profit from my first four game predictions and, pleasingly, it could have been more as my tips on the Liverpool and Manchester City games that didn’t win were not too far off at all.

Admittedly, £12.10 isn’t going to ensure a life of luxury from here on in, but a profit is a profit and as we are going for longer term wins over the bookies, we will certainly take that as a solid starting point on which to start the season.

Predictably, Man City got off to a winning start but Liverpool were held by Fulham and Manchester United were beaten at home by Brighton in what was a very disappointing start to the reign of Erik Ten Hag. With Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs all winning too, most of the big six got their season going by picking up three points heading into Matchday 2 of the season.

With Liverpool hosting Crystal Palace on Monday night, there are just nine games taking place across this weekend, the vast majority on Saturday and that means that we have a slightly smaller selection of games to pick from.

That’s not a problem though as there are some intriguing matches to look forward to including the first meeting of two of the ‘big six’ teams in the Premier League with Chelsea hosting Tottenham at Stamford Bridge in what could be a key game once things are settled at the end of the season in May.

Other intriguing games see Arsenal hosting Leicester, West Ham making the trip north to take on newly-promoted Nottingham Forest at the City ground, while Aston Villa will host Everton in the early kick off game on Saturday lunchtime.

So with a decent selection of games to consider for this week, let’s take a look at this week’s set of tips.

Football Betting Tips: Saturday 13th August

Aston Villa VS Everton
13/08/2022 12:30 pm GMT

Key Stats

Villa started the season poorly with a 2-0 defeat away to Bournemouth.
Everton were beaten at home 1-0 by Chelsea on Matchday 1 of the season.
Villa are unbeaten in their last 6 against Everton, winning four drawing two.
In 226 matches, Villa have 84 wins, Everton have 82 with 60 matches being drawn.

Neither of these teams got off to the start that they would have wanted last weekend. Everton losing at home to Chelsea was always likely, but Villa will have been hugely disappointed at the manner of their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth in a season that much is expected of Steven Gerrard’s expensively assembled team.

However, they can put that right here against a team that they have not lost to in any of their last six games, winning on four of those occasions. They need a big performance in front of their own fans and I think this will be a game in which some of their bigger players will deliver.

Everton huffed and puffed against Chelsea but I felt that they never seriously threatened the Londoners. Their lack of movement to bring in a genuine replacement for Richarlison has left them severely underpowered in attack and I think they will be in trouble as a result of that inaction.

Villa star Philippe Coutinho, ex-Liverpool, always had a good record against Everton and after a slow start last weekend, I think he will be the man to fire Villa to a win here and I think he is a great value option to scorer at any time during the game on Saturday.

Arsenal VS Leicester
13/08/2022 3:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Arsenal opened the season with a solid 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace.
Leicester gave up a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 in their opening game with Brentford.
Arsenal have lost just one of their last six against Leicester, winning four, drawing one.
In 148 games between the two, Arsenal have 70 wins, Leicester 33 with 45 draws.

Arsenal did well to earn a solid 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in their season opener last weekend and while they don’t look quite on a par with the likes of Man City or Liverpool just yet, there is plenty of evidence that they are going to be a much more difficult team to deal with this season.

Leicester have been quiet in the transfer market this season but after losing Kasper Schmeichel they took a 2-0 lead against Brentford in their opening game, only to be pegged back as some of the defensive issues that dogged the Foxes last season reared their head once again against the Bees.

The problem with Leicester is that they generally perform better against the bigger teams and as such, I think this could be a tricky game for Arsenal, but it is a game where I think if the Gunners want to be seen as a genuine top four contender, they need to land a win.

Gabriel Jesus has been superb for them since joining from Manchester City and he has hit a hat-trick in pre-season at the Emirates Stadium and I think he is great value for a first goalscorer bet here in a game that I feel should have plenty of goals.

Brentford VS Man Utd
13/08/2022 5:30 pm GMT

Key Stats

Brentford came from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw away to Leicester last weekend.
United lost 2-1 at home to Brighton in their season opener last Sunday.
United have not lost to Brentford since a 2-0 FA Cup defeat in 1938.
The teams have met 15 times, United winning 8, Brentford 5 with 2 draws.

This may sound ridiculous, but if Manchester United don’t win this game, then they could already find themselves with a real struggle to be top four contenders this season after their 2-1 home defeat to Brighton last weekend left them pointless in the Premier League.

Erik Ten Hag’s team started very slowly against Brighton and while they improved in the second half after Cristiano Ronaldo came on, they seldom troubled the Brighton goal and in the end, the Seagulls earned a deserved win, which heaps the pressure on the visitors here ahead of this tricky away game.

Brentford will feel the point they earned against Leicester last weekend was one earned, rather than two lost given that they came from 2-0 down to secure it and they’ll be hopeful of another big scalp here in their first home game of the season.

That said, I saw enough from United in that second half against Brighton to suggest that they can get a result here and they badly need to in order to avoid falling well off the pace being set at the top of the table. And at even money, I think this is a good value bet on a United win.

Football Betting Tips: Sunday 14th August

Chelsea VS Tottenham
14/08/2022 4:30 pm GMT

Key Stats

Chelsea were 1-0 winners at Everton in their opening game.
Spurs defeated Southampton 4-1 in their season opener last week.
Chelsea have won all the last five against Spurs without conceding a goal.
In 163 games, Chelsea have won 77, Spurs 55 with 41 matches being drawn.

The first big clash of two genuine top four contenders this season will be an intriguing one, especially considering Chelsea’s superb record against Spurs over the most recent games between the two, including wins in both games in the Premier League between the two last season.

However, of the two teams I think Spurs are probably just that bit further along the line in terms of being the finished article and I do worry where the goals are going to come from for Chelsea, especially in these big games against the Premier League’s stronger teams.

Spurs won’t have those issues given their attacking threat with Son, Kane and Kulusevski in particular looking very dangerous. They scored four goals against Southampton last week and I think they will end their poor run of goalscoring against Chelsea here.

However, I also feel defensively Spurs can be caught out so while I think Spurs will score, I also feel Chelsea will find the net at least once and as a result, I think that the draw is the most likely option here between the two.
