Premier League Tips – 19th to 21st April

Author: Published: April 19, 2022

Premier League TipsWell for the second week in a row, I correctly predicted the outcome of the Manchester City v Liverpool game, which meant that from my two selections on Saturday I turned a profit of £7.50.

Then on Sunday we nailed the Newcastle v Leicester City game for a return of £44 meaning we were up vs the bookies a total of £31.50 at the weekend!

We have a hugely intriguing set of games coming up in the Premier League in midweek as teams try to catch up on the fixtures that were postponed or moved due to other games taking precedence earlier in the season.

The action gets underway on Tuesday night at Anfield in what is now a huge game in the title race. A win or draw for Liverpool would take them top of the table, but to do that they are going to have to beat their most fierce rivals, Manchester United.

However, the Reds may be top of the Premier League for just 24 hours as on Wednesday evening Manchester City face Brighton at the Etihad in one of four games being played on Wednesday evening, which also includes a huge London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal.

Other games on Wednesday see Everton face Leicester in what is a huge game for the Toffees in their battle to avoid the drop and Newcastle United face Crystal Palace at St James’ Park with the home side aiming to keep its good home form going at the hands of cup semi-finalists Palace.

Then finally for this set of midweek games, we head to Thursday night for one game, but it is a crucial one at the bottom of the table, where Burnley, who sacked Sean Dyche earlier in the week, face Southampton hoping to take three points in their battle to avoid the drop.

Football Betting Tips: Tuesday 19th April

Liverpool VS Man Utd
19/04/2022 8:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Liverpool are 2nd in the EPL (73pts, 31 games), United are 5th (54pts, 32 games)
Liverpool have lost just once at home all season (v Inter in the Champions League)
United have kept a clean sheet in just 7 of their 32 games (Liverpool, 18 in 31).
Liverpool won 5-0 when the two teams met at Old Trafford back in October.

Mo Salah scored a hat-trick when these two giants last met at Old Trafford in October as Liverpool ran out 5-0 winners, indeed the Reds were so dominant that they were 5-0 up within 50 minutes at the home of their most fierce rivals.

After their FA Cup Semifinal win over Man City at the weekend, Liverpool will seek to pick up another three points here in a week when they face their other two most fierce rivals in United and Everton at Anfield.

United’s form has been patchy all season and if Liverpool play well, they should win this game, but these games are very unpredictable and the odds on the Reds not that great, that I felt that there was little value in backing them in any of the usual markets here.

Instead, I’ve gone for Diogo Jota to score at any time. First off, after being on the bench for the FA Cup Semifinal, I think he will start this game, secondly, he has scored in his last two games against United for Liverpool and is in great goalscoring form at the moment. So a bet on him to score anytime is a good one I feel.

Football Betting Tips: Wednesday 20th April

Chelsea VS Arsenal
20/04/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

Chelsea are third in the EPL (62 pts, 30 games), Arsenal are 6th (54 pts, 31 games)
Arsenal have lost four of their last five games, Chelsea won four of their last five.
Chelsea won 2-0 when the two teams met at the Emirates in August.
That win ended a run of three successive losses to Arsenal in league and cup.

Ok, so I have to admit, I have gone a bit left-field with this pick as unusually for me, it goes against most of the statistics. Chelsea are in much a better run of form than Arsenal, they still have (at the time of writing) the FA Cup Final to aim for and they are well clear of the teams behind them in third place in the table.

Add to that home advantage, and you would assume that a Chelsea win is the pick here. But that is where you’d be wrong as I have gone for Arsenal to land the win, and not just because of the excellent odds on the Gunners.

Prior to their win this season, Arsenal had proved to be a tough nut to crack for Thomas Tuchel’s team, as they lost all three games against the Gunners last season. Chelsea beat Arsenal early on this season when the Gunners were on a poor run, but this time I think Arsenal, despite their sketchy recent form, can spring a surprise.

As we saw against Brentford, Chelsea’s home form has not been great of late and while they improved against Southampton and Real Madrid, I think this game comes at the end of a very busy period for the Blues and I think as such, Arsenal could well snatch the win against the odds here.

Everton VS Leicester
20/04/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

Everton lie 17th in the EPL (28 pts), Leicester are 9th with 40 points.
Everton have won both their last two home games (Newcastle & Man Utd)
Leicester have lost just one of their last five games in all competitions.
Everton are unbeaten in the last three against Leicester (W2, D1).

If Everton are going to stay up, then it is going to be their home form that saves them. Frank Lampard’s team have won their last two home games and their form at Goodison Park since Lampard took over has generally been good, although far from perfect.

They face a Leicester side who have struggled hugely for consistency this season but who produced a fine performance in Eindhoven last week to beat PSV 2-1 on the road to reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals and keep their quest for silverware this season alive.

There’s no doubt in my mind Leicester can win this game, they have the better squad in my view, but I think Everton’s need is so much greater at the moment and when that happens, the home support at Goodison is very much like a 12th man for the team and that has been vital in their last two wins at home.

Leicester do score goals though and I can see them scoring here, but I think the Toffees will do just enough to snatch the win, most likely by a 2-1 scoreline and if that is the case, that win may be the one that keeps them in the Premier League next season.

Football Betting Tips: Thursday 21st April

Burnley VS Southampton
21/04/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

Burnley sacked manager Sean Dyche last week after 11 years in charge.
Burnley lie 18th in the EPL. Southampton are 12th in the table on 39 pts.
Southampton are unbeaten in the last three against Burnley (W2, D1)
Five of the last six games between the two have seen two or more goals scored.

First off, I have to address Burnley sacking Sean Dyche. Personally, I think it is a terrible decision and Burnley will go down because of it. They may have been relegated anyway, but Dyche was the reason that they spent the past six years in the EPL, given he had a pittance to spend each season compared to other teams in the division.

I also know Mike Jackson, the interim manager, is not the most attack-minded of coaches and also not the most inspirational and rather than get a bounce from sacking a manager as many teams do, I actually feel this will hurt Burnley much more than it will help them.

The other thing to consider here is Southampton. They are a very odd team. They conceded 6 against Chelsea inside an hour at home, then next time out, kept a clean sheet against a good Arsenal team and earned a win. Consistency is not the Saints strong point, but they are very much a streaky team.

So when Southampton tend to win a game, they tend to win a bunch and I can see them doing that here. I can’t see Burnley fans being best pleased at what has happened with Dyche and I think they’ll voice that displeasure here and Southampton can take advantage to claim the win.
