Premier League Tips – 1st & 2nd October

Author: Published: September 29, 2022

Premier League TipsHurrah! We’re back with the Premier League once again this weekend after the International break.

Is it just me or do those two week breaks just seem to drag? Especially when you consider how poorly most of the home nations are doing (bar Scotland of course). There wasn’t much to cheer for England fans against Italy especially.

I’m just hoping that instead of England playing really well throughout qualification and up to the World Cup starting and then being rubbish when the tournament starts, we may be getting the rubbish spell out of the way now and then play well in Qatar.

However, in truth, I don’t hold out much hope for that.

So, I am glad that we are back on more familiar ground this week and we start the weekend off with a bang with a North London derby between Arsenal and Spurs at the Emirates.

Saturday afternoon also sees Chelsea in action away to Crystal Palace, while Liverpool are at home to Brighton in what looks a very tricky game for the Reds especially given their recent form compared to how well Brighton had been playing under the now Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Ten on Sunday we have a huge game from the Etihad Stadium where the two Manchester rivals, City and United clash in what should be a cracking game with both sides in decent form heading into this battle for local bragging rights.

Just a heads up, I’ve revamped the Key Stats section to provide a bit more uniformity across the games. I hope this proves to be a positive change for you.

So with a bumper weekend of games to enjoy, let’s take a look at what my tips are for this weekend.

Football Betting Tips: Saturday 1st October

Arsenal VS Tottenham
01/10/2022 12:30 pm GMT

Key Stats

Arsenal 1st (18pts, 7 games), Tottenham 3rd (17pts, 7 games)
Arsenal - W4,D0,L1, Tottenham - W3,D1,L1
Arsenal 84 wins, Tottenham 67 wins, 54 Draws.
Five of the last six games between the two have seen over 2.5 goals scored

With both these teams involved in the thick of things at the top of the table, this North London derby should be a cracker between teams that have just one point and two places separating them in the early EPL table.

The Gunners have begun the season very well with just one defeat in their seven games so far, but that came against their only other game against a top five team (Man Utd) and they are yet to play the likes of Man City, Chelsea or Liverpool this season.

Spurs are unbeaten and have played Chelsea away (drawing 2-2) and they smashed six past Leicester in their last game, Son scoring a hat-trick and that should set them up very well for this big clash between the two great rivals, although the 12.30pm kick off time doesn’t do either team any favours.

The trend in this game is for both teams to combine for over 2.5 goals of late, but I think both these teams have smartened up defensively a great deal of late and despite the attacking talent on show, I am of the opinion that this game is likely to finish with 0, 1 or 2 goals at the most, making the Under 2.5 goals a solid option here.

Fulham VS Newcastle United
01/10/2022 3:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Fulham 6th (11pts, 7 games) Newcastle 10th (8pts, 7 games)
Fulham - W2,D0,L3, Newcastle - W1,D3,L1
Fulham 31 wins, Newcastle 29 wins, 15 draws
Both teams have scored in just 2 of the last 9 games between the two.

Both these teams are in the top half of the Premier League table and that will certainly be a good start for them to build on over the remainder of the season, although with 11 goals conceded by Fulham, only Brentford have conceded more in the top half of the EPL table this season.

Newcastle’s issue has been too many drawn games, with four out of their last five EPL games finishing all square, and the other game almost did too but for an unfortunate late winner for Liverpool at Anfield. Clearly Eddie Howe has made his team tough to beat, but they have struggled to turn that into three points too often.

I do think Newcastle are edging towards being a better side, than a worse one, than their drawn games suggest and I think that they have enough quality to pick up a something here, especially with Alexander Isak leading the line, as the Swede youngster looks a quality signing from Sociedad.

The one thing I take from this fixture is that goals tend to be hard to come by and both teams have been pretty tough to beat this season. It’s been a while since Fulham drew a game, while Newcastle have drawn plenty of late and with the injuries Newcastle have, I think the good bet here is to back the draw.

Football Betting Tips: Sunday 2nd October

Man City VS Man Utd
02/10/2022 2:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Man City 2nd (17pts, 7 games), Man Utd 5th (12pts, 6 games)
Man City W4,D1,L0, Man Utd – W4,D0,L1
Man City 57 wins, Man Utd 77 wins, 53 Draws
The away team has won 9 of the last 13 games between the two.

It’s startling to note that the away team has won 9 and picked up a point in one more game in the last 13 between the two, which does suggest that Manchester United fans may be hoping to inflict the first defeat of the season on their local rivals.

However, City have been in excellent form and even when they have fallen behind in games of late, such as against Dortmund in the Champions League, they have found a way to come back and land the win, which is the hallmark of a very good side, albeit one with perhaps a few defensive issues.

I do feel United are well set up to cause City problems on the break here and I think perhaps the Red Devils may get off to a better start here as City have been a bit sluggish out of the blocks in recent games, but does that mean that they will land another away win? I’m not so sure.

I’m going to go bold with this prediction. While the away team has won most recently, City have won the last two and they look a class apart in the EPL this season, but they do concede goals and I think United could catch them and perhaps even lead at the half, but I am backing City to stage a comeback in the second period to claim the win in the HT/FT market at a very nice price.

West Ham VS Wolverhampton Wanderers
02/10/2022 4:30 pm GMT

Key Stats

West Ham 18th (4pts, 7 games), Wolves 17th (6pts, 7 games)
West Ham - W2,D1,L2, Wolves – W2,D2,L1
West Ham 32 wins, Wolves 23 Wins, 14 Draws
Just one of the last 10 games between the two has seen both teams score.

Last season, both these games finished up as a 1-0 win for the home side in the Premier League and given their form this season and the fact both are struggling a little for form and goals, I have the feeling that goals will be at a premium once again on Sunday.

There has been just one draw between the two teams since 1993, covering a total of 17 games in that period, so the history tends to show that this is a game that tends to produce a winner one way or the other.

I do feel both sides are in a worse position than their quality indicates, but both have had issues scoring goals, with both scoring just three times in their 7 games. The fewest of all teams in the Premier League and it is that issue which has been the reason why both lie near the drop zone.

Games involving these teams this season have not produced too many goals too often and the same can be said for a good few historic match ups. With both teams at the wrong end of the table, I expect this to be a tight game but I just have the feeling that the home side will edge the win here perhaps by a single goal to nil.

West Ham to win to nil - £10 returns £33.00
