Premier League Tips – 21st & 22nd August
Well, we didn’t completely wash out last weekend, we did land the very first tip of the season for a return of just over £23.00, but the remaining three tips didn’t quite pan out, which means that we made a slight loss on the opening weekend of just under £17.
I did feel a bit unlucky with the Leicester v Wolves game as I went for 2-0 and it was a 1-0 win for Leicester and in truth, they should have had a second. That would have been £80 profit straight away.
However, given that you don’t have any form to go by, and the fitness levels of a number of players, especially key players that played a part in the Euros, Copa America and Olympics are a bit of a mystery, then it is to be expected to have a few unusual results over these opening weeks.
So, who impressed last week? Well Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham did and I also felt Brentford and Everton did well. It’s going to be interesting to see which of those teams can add a second win to those they achieved last week.
More to the points, at least we now have some form to go on for this second set of games and though it is only one match for the majority of teams, we do have at least some idea of how teams are shaping up for the season ahead.
Football Betting Tips: Saturday 21st August
This is a tricky game for both these teams. Leeds come off a heavy defeat to Manchester United but will have Elland Road support, Everton defeated Southampton 3-1 at Goodison Park, so will have confidence, but Leeds away is a tough opener for your away campaign.
Last season both teams won their respective away games, Leeds 1-0 at Goodison, Everton 2-1 at Elland Road, so the odds may favour the away side in that respect. Had Leeds got something from their game with United I may well have gone for that here.
However, given the nature of their defeat at Old Trafford, I can see Leeds being really fired up for this one. However Rafa Benitez is a master tactician and he will have Everton set up to try and pick Leeds off on the counter and I think the Toffees can get some joy doing that.
This is a tough one and I think while both teams could win it, a draw is the more likely result.
Premier League Tips: Sunday 22nd August
It is hard to make much of a case for Southampton to win this game. They were soundly beaten twice by Manchester United last season, including a 9-0 mauling at Old Trafford after they were reduced to ten men just moments into that game.
Given their respective results on the opening day of the season, it is hard to make a case for Southampton to reverse that kind of form here. They are at home, which is a positive, but United had the best away record in the Premier League last season, which is the last things Saints fans want to hear.
With Varane and Sancho still to make their full debuts for their new club, although Sancho has played as a sub, there is more strength in depth to come and after how well they destroyed Leeds on Saturday, it is hard to think that they can’t do likewise here.
As such, I think Southampton may grab a goal here, perhaps from a Ward-Prowse set piece, but I think United will still run out the clear winners.
Spurs hold the upper hand in recent games between these two teams but what makes this game so interesting is Nuno Santos returning to his former club in just his second EPL game, while for Spurs, all eyes will be on whether Harry Kane is on the bench, the team sheet or on his way to Manchester City.
Spurs showed last week that there is life for them without Kane with a fine 1-0 win over Manchester City to kick their season off in fine style. While Wolves went down to a 1-0 defeat away to Leicester City in what was a tight affair in the main.
That means the home side will be very keen to get off the mark here, but their record against Spurs isn’t great and I think with
What an intriguing game lies in prospect here. Chelsea have not beaten Arsenal in any of their last three attempts and in truth, Arsenal have a much better record over their London rivals in recent times,
However, as Champions League holders and after a fine win over Crystal Palace last weekend, Chelsea will go into this game very confident, especially with Arsenal beginning the season with a very poor 2-0 defeat away to Brentford.
Last season, it was a similar story for the two teams, but Arsenal ended up winning that game, but this time around, I don’t see that happening. Chelsea have made some nice tactical changes and the addition of Romelu Lukaku gives them the goalscorer that they were lacking at times last season.
I think that tips the balance in their favour here and while it should be a cracking London derby, I am backing the visitors to come away with a narrow 2-1 victory and maybe Lukaku just starting to pay back some of his hefty transfer fee if he’s selected.
