Premier League Tips – 28th & 29th December
Welcome back! I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas!
No luck on the games on Boxing Day, which means that I am £30 down because one of my tips was a cancelled game which voided the bet.
I must admit, I do think that the way the Premier League is blindly soldiering on with the fixtures as more and more players and managers go down with Covid is particularly unfair and lacks foresight. Players are not cattle and I feel for the teams in the division with smaller squads who the loss of 6 or 7 first team members decimates their chances of success.
As has already been pointed out, the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, and to a slightly lesser extent Liverpool, Tottenham, Man Utd and Arsenal, can put out teams still packed with internationals even if they lost an entire first team squad. Sure, it would not be as strong but you’d back them to beat a severely weakened Norwich, Watford or Newcastle team every day of the week.
This set of tips is a bit rushed – as I have literally one day to get them done in between the next set of games in the Premier league. A ridiculous schedule and one that needs to be addressed moving forward as I can see a lot of players coming down with injury (and illness) over this period.
As with last week’s tips, I’ve tried to pick games that I think have the best chance of going ahead and these are outlined below as per usual.
Football Betting Tips: Tuesday 28th December
This is a really intriguing fixture when you look back at the history of the game as it is a match that has produced lots of goals over time and with both teams finding the net in games with unnerving irregularity.
Spurs have won the last three games between the teams, scoring ten goals and conceding five and they did the double over Southampton in the league last year, winning 5-2 at St Marys and 2-1 at home.
Southampton’s record against Spurs is not great and if they have one consolation it is that their two most recent victories against Spurs have both come at home, a 2-1 win in March 2019 and a 1-0 win in January 2020.
However, despite a great win away to West Ham on Boxing Day, I think this is a big ask for Saints here as I think Antonio Conte has got this Spurs team moving forward very well at the moment and he has got Kane and Son finding the net again and that is a worry for any team. As such, I am backing Spurs to earn a narrow 2-1 victory here.
Crystal Palace were put to the sword by Tottenham on Boxing Day, although they did play a large proportion of the game without their main man Wilfried Zaha, who was sent off in the first half of the game.
With Patrick Vieira absent with Covid, Palace were not their usual solid self in defence and I think that they need the return of their manager to the touchline just as much as they need Zaha to star on the field, rather than being sent off it.
Norwich though are in a real battle against relegation and even though I think Dean Smith is a fantastic manager, I feel that Palace have the better quality players and with home advantage, they should be able to make that tell, even minus Zaha.
I do fancy Norwich to score a goal as Palace will offer you chances, but I am backing the Eagles to come through and land the win
Leicester City were involved in a thrilling 6-3 defeat at Manchester City on Boxing Day, coming back from 4-0 down at half time to make it 4-3 early in the second half before two further Manchester City goals handed the home side another big win.
The two teams also met at Anfield in the Carabao Cup, with a much-changed Liverpool team snatching a win on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw, which saw Liverpool equalise in the fifth minute of added time to force penalties.
I can see another game here where both teams find the net but I expect this Liverpool team to be much more like the one that has lost just once in the Premier League this season and while Leicester will give them a tough game, I think the return of a number of players does help Liverpool out a great deal here.
I can’t quiet put my finger on what final score this game will be, so I am going to take the lower odds option here and back Liverpool to win the game but both teams to find the net.
Football Betting Tips: Wednesday 29th December
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been one of the more outspoken critics of the Premier League’s decision to play on with so many players absent through illness but the Chelsea boss could have three key men back from injury for the game with Brighton on Wednesday.
After a solid win away to Aston Villa on Boxing Day, Chelsea moved onto the same number of points as Liverpool but with an inferior goal difference and having played a game more and they will be desperate for the win here to keep up with Manchester City at the top of the table.
Chelsea have lost just one game in their last nine, but they have drawn a number of games and they cannot afford to do that here and fall further behind City, who should win their game in this set of games against Brentford.
Brighton come into the game having ended a run of 11 games without a win in the league on Boxing Day and they will be confident of frustrating Chelsea here, but I think the Londoners will do enough to earn the victory and I think a 2-0 scoreline to the home side sounds about right.
