Saturday’s Nations League Tips – 24th September

Author: Published: September 23, 2022

Football Betting TipsWell. Unfortunately, two of my tips last week were for postponed games, while the two that played didn’t land me a win, although Gabriel Jesus did score, he just nabbed the second goal in Arsenal’s 3-3-0 win over Brentford.

Remember what I said about being frustratingly close at times in recent weeks?

Well, this week it is a change of pace as we are on one of the International Breaks once again and this time we have the fifth and sixth round of matches in the Nations League to look forward to.

Although if you are an England, Wales or Northern Ireland fan, there hasn’t been too much to cheer with none of the three home nations having won a game in their previous four in this competition and England were smashed 4-0 at home by Hungary in their last game.

England can’t qualify from their group and in truth are barely hanging on to a place in League A in the Nations League and with games to come against Italy (away) and Germany (at Wembley) the signs are not great for England being in the elite level of competition in this tournament next time around.

Of course, by the time you read this on Saturday, we’ll already know how England will have got on against Italy (I think a 1-0 defeat is on the cards) but I am not going to be focusing on those games and instead I’ll be putting together a Saturday Nations League acca for you.

Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland are all in action, while there are a couple of very entertaining games in prospect as the Czech Republic face Portugal, Serbia take on Sweden and Spain host Switzerland.

Those games may, or may not, feature in my tips for this week, so let’s take a look at what I feel is a solid selection of bets for this weekend.

Nations League Tips: Saturday 24th September

Northern Ireland VS Kosovo
24/09/2022 5:00 pm GMT

Key Stats

Kosovo are 2nd in League C Group 2 on 6 points, 6 points behind Greece.
N.Ireland are third in the group on goal difference ahead of Cyprus, both on 2 points.
When the teams last met in Kosovo, the home side ran out 3-2 winners.
Greece just needs one point from their final 2 games to ensure they win this group.

Analysis

When these two teams met in June, Northern Ireland could not overcome a slow start where they fell 2-0 behind to claim a point, despite battling hard against a Kosovo side that have become a well-organised and attack-minded unit, although they do have issues with conceding goals in many games they play.

With a strong home crowd behind them though, and still seeking their first win in the group, Northern Ireland will feel that this is a game that they can get something from. And they need to as if Cyprus can pick up points, then the Northern Irish team could find themselves dropping into League D in the next tournament.

That would be a real blow for a young team seeking to reestablish themselves internationally after making a surprise but impressive appearance at the Euro 2016 finals. However, in truth, you could say the same about a Kosovo side still to reach a major finals in their history.

With Greece way out in front of this group, top spot is almost certainly out of the question but Northern Ireland need something from this game. The problem is I can see both teams scoring here and I reckon a draw, with both teams finding the net once or twice is a solid option,

Scotland VS Rep Ireland
24/09/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

Scotland are 2nd in League B Group 1 on 6 points, a point behind Ukraine.
Ireland are third in the group, two points behind the Scots after 4 games.
Ireland routed Scotland 3-0 when the teams met in Dublin earlier in the group.
The Scots have won just one of the last five between the two teams, Ireland three.

Analysis

After going out of the World Cup Playoffs in the summer, Scotland suffered something of a hangover when they faced Ireland in the Nations League, losing 3-0 in Dublin in a result that was very surprising, given the Scots generally excellent form of late compared to the rather indifferent form the Republic of Ireland have endured.

It was also a defeat which meant that the rearranged game with the Ukraine on Wednesday evening takes on even more importance with the Scots and Ukrainians battling for top spot in the group and promotion into League A.

Scotland will face Ireland and then have another game to complete their Nations League campaign later on in the week, but they will know that regardless of the outcome of the game with the Ukraine, this is a game that they need to show that the performance in Dublin was an aberration in what has otherwise been a solid spell for the Scots.

I think Ireland played Scotland at a good time in the summer, but I fancy the home side to land the win here and with John McGinn in such good form for his country, backing him to score at any time looks a great value bet here.

Czech Republic VS Portugal
24/09/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

The Czech’s lie 3rd in League A Group 2 with four points from four games.
Portugal lie 2nd in the group, on 7 points one point behind group leaders Spain.
Portugal handed the Czech’s a 2-0 defeat when the teams met previously in the group.
Defeat for Portugal combined with a win for Spain would see Spain win the group.

Analysis

These two teams have played some big games in the past in big tournaments and it is the Portuguese who have come out on top in three of those four games, including all the most recent matches. Such as the 2-0 win they enjoyed over the same opponents back in June this year.

With Cristiano Ronaldo rested as he has been on the bench for Manchester United in recent times, the Portuguese superstar will be raring to go in this game and given the high quality of supporting players behind him, Portugal won’t be too daunted about heading into Prague to take on the Czechs.

That said, the home side have landed some big results in recent times at home with wins over England and Switzerland, while they have also picked up a draw against Spain. They also landed a memorable win in the Netherlands, which shows that they are a team that won’t be easy for Portugal to pick up the win against.

In fact, I think Portugal may struggle to get the win here. The Czechs are well organised, discipline and physical and I think they will be able to match what the Portuguese can offer here, hence I think a 1-1 or 0-0 draw is the most likely outcome.

Prediction

Draw - £10 returns £37.50

Serbia VS Sweden
24/09/2022 7:45 pm GMT

Key Stats

Serbia are 2nd in League B Group 4, four points ahead of Sweden, 3 behind Norway.
Sweden lie 3rd on 3 pts having lost all their last three games in the competition.
Serbia defeated Sweden in Stockholm 1-0 when the teams met back in June in the group.
If Serbia fail to win and Norway beat Slovenia, Norway would win the group.

Analysis

Group 4 of League B is a very tough group with Norway, Serbia and Sweden all quality sides and while the Norwegians lead the group, Serbia in particular will be hoping that they can follow up their win in Stockholm against Sweden back in June to land another win that could see them still have a chance of winning the group on the final day of action.

Sweden’s hopes seem pinned on a younger group of players and at the moment, they are not quite measuring up to some of the Sweden teams of the past, although new Newcastle striker Isak looks a quality front man.

Having won in Sweden, I fancy the home side to take full advantage in front of a partisan home crowd and with the powerful presence of Aleksandar Mitrovic leading the line, I think that he is going to be handful for that Swedish defence.

So much so that while I think Serbia will win, my best bet here is to back the Fulham striker to score the opening goal in Belgrade to put Serbia on the road to victory.

Prediction

Aleksandar Mitrovic to score first - £10 returns £45.00
