Weekend Football Tips – 16th & 17th April
We were £2.50 down last weekend with just the draw for the Man City v Liverpool game coming in. In truth, I kicked myself for that because I was very tempted to do the draw with both teams to score, which would have resulted in a slight profit, but I went for the extra security of having the 0-0 as a winning option too.
This weekend though it is a bit of an unusual one as alongside a smattering of Premier League games taking place on Saturday and Sunday, we also have the two FA Cup Semi Finals from Wembley.
I’m sure you are aware that the first of these on Saturday will see Liverpool and Manchester City lock horns once again after their 2-2 draw last week in the Premier League, followed by both successfully making it into the Champions League semi-finals in the week thanks to draws in their second leg games.
Then on Sunday, Chelsea will meet Crystal Palace in an all-London affair, with Thomas Tuchel’s side aiming to reach their second domestic cup final of the season, having lost the Carabao Cup Final to Liverpool earlier in the spring.
Palace will be aiming to reach their third final, having lost the last two that they have appeared in and Patrick Vieira will be hoping his team’s solid form over the last few weeks can continue into this marquee game.
Alongside these games there are also six Premier League fixtures taking place on Saturday and Sunday with some key games for teams at the bottom of the table with Norwich, Watford and Burnley all having a game.
So without any further ado, let’s take a look at my tips for this week.
Football Betting Tips: Saturday 16th April
Not so long ago, both these teams were in a rich vein of form and looking towards making significant strides up the table. However,a run of poor results over the last month or so has seen both of them drop below the standards that we had come to expect from them.
Since beating Norwich in February, Southampton have lost five of their last six EPL games, conceding four or more goals on three of those occasions, drawing just the once, away to Leeds United a couple of weeks ago.
After five wins in a row was brought to a halt by Liverpool, Arsenal have lost two of their next three, their only win coming in a 1-0 victory at Villa Park and that slip in form has allowed Tottenham to take the fourth placed spot in the table away from them.
Arsenal’s needs for points is more pressing than Southampton at the moment, but there is no doubt both managers badly need a win. I can see an open game here but in truth, picking a score or result is tough, so I am going to go for a goalscorer bet here with good odds on Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka looking appealing to score anytime.
These two teams played out a fantastic 2-2 draw last weekend, the second such result between them this season and both also reached the Champions League semifinals in midweek with draws against their opponents to clinch that spot in the next round.
While Liverpool were able to rest six key players for the game with Benfica, Man City were not able to have that luxury against Atletico Madrid in midweek and the hard and physical nature of that game, plus possible injuries to Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne made manager Pep Guardiola admit his side were “in trouble” after the game.
Quite what he meant by that, isn’t clear, but it is going to be interesting to see if either player can play in this game. Even so, I think the fact City could not rest too many players for their game with Atletico does put them at a disadvantage here.
On a big pitch like Wembley, I can see fatigue playing a key role here and if City are missing one or both of Walker and De Bruyne, I think that swings the tie just in favour of Liverpool. It will of course be very close, but I think the Reds will steal the win late on in the game.
Football Betting Tips: Sunday 17th April
A look at the defensive records of both these teams reveals two teams that don’t really defend particularly well and the stats bear that out with both teams scoring in over 65% of Leicester’s games this season and over 61% of Newcastle’s.
So both teams scoring looks a solid pick here, so the question is what result do I pair that with? Well, a look at the form suggests that Newcastle, despite their lower league position and worse recent form may well be the pick here.
Eddie Howe’s team last lost at home back in December to Man City and they face a Leicester City side that have one of the poorest away records in the Premier League this season (only four teams have collected fewer points on the road than the Foxes).
Leicester also had a tough midweek game against PSV Eindhoven to navigate before this game and when you factor in all those things, I think that a Newcastle win, perhaps by a 2-1 scoreline, may well be the best option to pair with the both teams to score bet.
After their superb effort in Madrid in midweek, Chelsea will be desperate to bounce back and claim a win here and a spot in the FA Cup Final, predominantly because this is now the only trophy that the Blues can win this season, assuming that they are out of the title race.
However, that win in Madrid will really have taken its toll on the players, not just physically but mentally too and I think it is expected that we will see a reaction to that in this game, and I can even see manager Tuchel perhaps swapping out some players to keep the team fresh.
That’s because Palace have shown themselves to be in good form at the moment and they have recorded some good results of late, drawing with Man City, beating the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham. They will be well-rested for this game too and that could play a key role.
Palace will be without Conor Gallagher in midfield, who is a big loss but I think that if Palace can find some of the form they have showed in the league of late, they could give Chelsea some real problems here and I think Chelsea may struggle with fatigue, so while I still feel Chelsea will go through, I think it may require extra time for them to do so.
