Weekend Football Tips – Sat 8th & Sun 9th December

Premier League TipsAfter what could be a pivotal week in the title race, we now have another full set of games to look forward to in the Premier League this coming weekend.

There is a gap now of six points between second placed Liverpool and the chasing pack, while there is a further gap of eight points between the group of Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea, back for Everton, Bournemouth and Manchester United.

It does look like the Premier League is starting to take shape now and we may have another two-horse race for the title.

Nothing went right with my midweek football tips so I’m keen to do much better with this weekends predictions.

Key Stats
  • Cardiff have moved to 16th in the Premier League on the back of some decent home form of late. They have 11 points from their 15 games.
  • Southampton sacked Mark Hughes last week, replacing him with Ralf Hassenhutl. The Saints lie in 18th position with just one win and nine points.
  • Southampton will be hoping that Ryan Bertrand and Danny Ings could be fit to return after missing games with back and hamstring injuries of late.
  • The teams last met in the Premier League back in 2013/14, Southampton winning 3-0 in Cardiff, but then Cardiff earned a 1-0 win at St Mary’s.
Analysis:

This is a real relegation six-pointer at the Cardiff City Stadium, with both teams desperate for the points. Ralf Hassenhutl’s appointment as Southampton manager is an interesting one, having done well with Red Bull Leipzig, the Austrian now faces a tough task to try and turn the Saints season around.

Cardiff however are starting to look stronger at home and Neil Warnock will be pleased with how his team is performing on home soil. Their away form may still be a real concern, but at home they are capable of giving anybody a real run for their money.

Usually when a new manager comes in, a team gets a boost of morale as Fulham did against Southampton a few weeks back when appointing Ranieri as coach, but I think Hassenhutl’s task is a far greater one and in truth, even with a new manager, I have difficulty seeing Southampton getting something from this game.

As such, I am backing another hard-working and battling Cardiff display and for that to lead to the Welsh side picking up what could be a vital three points.

Key Stats
  • Chelsea lost their second game in three matches midweek, when Wolves came from behind to earn a 2-1 win. That result leaves Chelsea in 4th place with 31 points.
  • Man City defeated Watford to earn their 13th win in 15 Premier League games this season, they are top of the table with 41 points and having scored 45 goals in total.
  • City have won five of the last eight games between the teams, including winning all the last three matches between the clubs without conceding a single goal.
  • The teams have met 160 times so far in their history, Chelsea winning 66 of those games, Man City 55 and the remaining 39 games have finished in draws.
Analysis:

A couple of weeks ago, I’d have backed Chelsea, with a rampant Eden Hazard in top form, to have given Manchester City a real run for their money here and to have perhaps even won the game, such was the quality of the football they were playing.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and after two defeats in three games, I think Chelsea’s chances of picking up a win even at home against Manchester City are slim, even against a City side that were not quite at their best against Watford in midweek.

Mauricio Sarri will know that this game is now a must-win game for his side if they are to have any say in the title race this season, defeat would leave them 13 points behind City. As it is the gap is ten points and that may already be too much to bridge over the remainder of the season.

That said, the quality of players like Hazard, Willian and Kante in particular mean that Chelsea at home always stand a chance against any team and while City may have the advantage in recent times, I am backing Chelsea to perhaps sneak a point here in a 1-1 draw.

Key Stats
  • Leicester earned a point from their trip to Fulham in the week. That left them in 9th place in the league table with 22 points and a +3 goal difference.
  • Tottenham beat Southampton 3-1 in midweek to move into third place on 33 points. They have scored 28 goals so far this season, conceding 16.
  • Recent games between the teams have resulted in some matches with plenty of goals. Results have included, 5-4, 6-1, 4-3 wins for Spurs and a 4-4 draw.
  • Last season, Leicester won the corresponding fixture 2-1 at the King Power, while the return game at Wembley finished in a 5-4 win for Tottenham in the final day of the season.
Analysis:

There’s been a fair few high scoring games between these two teams over the years, none moreso than last May’s 5-4 win for Tottenham at Wembley. Spurs have been the beneficiary in most of those high scoring games, but Leicester have had some notable successes over Spurs too over the years, most notably in their Premier League winning season a couple of years ago.

Spurs form dipped against Arsenal last weekend but they returned to winning ways against Southampton in midweek and they are the form team. Spurs have not yet drawn a game this season, which does tell you it tends to be win or bust with them.

Leicester have been a tough proposition for the top teams so far this year and I doubt they will make it easy for Spurs. I see this being a close game and perhaps a late goal being the decider, and for me it is most likely that Tottenham, with their greater firepower in attack and especially now Jamie Vardy has picked up a knock, who look most likely to grab the win.

That said, I do still expect the Foxes to get their obligatory goal at home.

Key Stats
  • Newcastle put in a good display to earn a 1-1 draw with Everton in midweek. That left the Toon Army in 14th place in the table on 13 points, five behind West Ham in 13th.
  • Wolves put in a stunning display at home to Chelsea on Wednesday evening, coming from 1-0 down to claim a 2-1 victory, ending a poor run of form for Nuno Santo’s team.
  • Wolves have never beaten Newcastle in the Premier League, their six games ending in four draws and two wins for Newcastle.
  • The teams last met in 2016-17 in the Championship, with Wolves winning 2-0 at St James park, before Newcastle earned a 2-0 win in the League Cup and a 1-0 win at Molineux.
Analysis:

Newcastle’s recent form has been much improved, bar that defeat to West Ham last weekend, but they face a tough ask on Sunday against a Wolves side who must be bristling with confidence having beaten Chelsea at home in midweek.

Newcastle though went to Everton and earned a creditable 1-1 draw and Rafa Benitez will be hoping his sides defensive resilience on the road, will be on display here against a Wolves team that have raised their game against the top sides in the Premier League this season, but who have also struggled against the mid to lower table teams.

Nuno Santo’s side were on a poor run of form heading into the Chelsea game in midweek but that win will be a huge confidence boost heading into this game and Wolves may well start as the slight favourites with the bookies as a result.

I do feel though that this Newcastle side is tough to beat and if they can learn from the mistakes they made against West Ham, I am backing the home side to pick up a point against tricky opponents today.
