Weekend Premier League Tips – 18th & 19th December
Welcome to our last set of Premier League tips before Christmas and I’m hopeful that, Covid permitting, we may be able to sock one to the bookies this weekend.
I say Covid-permitting because as you will know, we have already seen a number of games postponed, including all three of Spurs last games, plus the game with Man Utd and Brentford has been called off, as has their game with Brighton on Saturday lunchtime.
So this week, I am not only trying to pick which are the best bets to back for the games I select, but also trying to pick out which are the games most likely to go ahead at the weekend.
With that in mind, I think I am going to avoid the Man Utd, Tottenham and Leicester games, and possibly also the Watford one too (although I did like the look of a couple of bets in that game), and this does somewhat narrow the scope in terms of what bets we can make on the remaining games.
I do think though that we are reaching a point where teams are going to have so many players out with Covid that playing games becomes farcical. It is going to be interesting to see what the Premier League do, if anything.
Anyway, for the time being, I am assuming the games will go ahead and as such, I have outlined my tips for the best of them tomorrow.
Football Betting Tips: Saturday 18th December
I have been hugely impressed with how Steven Gerrard has managed to get this Aston Villa side performing very well in such a short time. He may have lost two games, but they were narrow losses to Manchester City and Liverpool and he has won the other three games, which does not augur well for a Burnley side with just one win this season.
Draws have been the problem for Sean Dyche. Burnley have had eight of them from their games so far this season which proves that they are durable and tough to beat, but also underlines the fact that they are lacking the quality going forward to turn those points into three.
Both teams have suffered a bit in front of goal this season but with Villa now getting Danny Ings back to play up front alongside Ollie Watkins, I think Gerrard’s new look Villa is going to be a bit more potent in front of goal over the coming weeks.
I can’t see a goal fest here as both teams are too strong defensively for that but I can see Aston Villa winning this game either 1-0 or 2-0, so the bet on the win to nil market is the best option I can see here.
Leeds United will be licking their wounds after a 7-0 mauling at the hands of a rampant Manchester City in midweek and they now travel home to face an Arsenal side that have bounced back well from two defeats to win both their last two games, the last coming in a crucial game against West Ham.
There’s no doubt that injuries have hit Leeds hard this season, but I also feel teams are now no longer surprised at the way Leeds play and have found ways to exploit that. Many teams suffer in their second season in the Premier League and Leeds certainly look to be amongst that number.
Arsenal have bounced back from their worst ever Premier League start to now lie fourth in the table. They are some way off the pace being set by Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, but at the moment, they seem to be the most consistent of the teams chasing that trio.
I think Emile Smith Rowe really does make them tick and with Saka looking very lively against West Ham on Monday, I think that Leeds could be in for another tough time here. This won’t be a one-sided win and Leeds will score I feel, but I see Arsenal coming out as the winners in the end.
Football Betting Tips: Sunday 19th December
Wolves are a team that do not score or concede many goals. Chelsea don’t concede many either, but have scored a fair few in the Premier League this season and I think it is that firepower which is likely to be the key influence here.
As games with Liverpool, Manchester City and also Brighton have shown, Wolves are involved in a lot of games that finish 1-0, but I feel this is a game that they will feel they need to try and get something from. Also with Chelsea conceding a fair few goals of late, Wolves may fancy their chances of a goal here.
The problem is, if Wolves do score, I think Chelsea will be able to go down and score two goals in reply. Especially if Romelu Lukaku is back fully fit as I think he has the physicality to unsettle the Wolves back line, who seem to cope better with more technical and speedy strikers.
As such, I think Chelsea will win this game, the question for me is whether Wolves would score a goal and given Chelsea’s defensive issues of late, I think it is a good bet they will, hence I am going for a 2-1 Chelsea win here.
It is fair to say that Newcastle’s record against Manchester City isn’t the best with just one win in the last 12 games between the two and nine defeats. Given that they have won once this season and Man City are top of the EPL, it is hard to make any kind of case for Newcastle here.
That said, I do think City’s defence is susceptible to teams that are quick on the counterattack. Red Bull Leipzig have shown this markedly this season in Europe and I think if Newcastle can get Saint-Maximin on the ball, his direct running will cause City problems and perhaps lead to a Newcastle goal.
However, regardless of that I can’t see anything but a City win here and likely by a couple of goals too, but with other games having the potential to be called off, I decided to go with this game in the hope it remains on.
As such, the best bet here for me is for a Newcastle consolation and for Saint-Maximin to grab the goal.
