How Does Competitive H1Z1 Work?

Unlike most other online multiplayer games which have entered into the eSports world, H1Z1 is a battle royale style game rather than a multiplayer arena game or a role playing game. What that means is that a competitive H1Z1 match typically involves a huge number of players all competing at the same time and on the same map.

Maps & Toxic Gas

H1Z1 GasAs you would probably expect, there are a number of different H1Z1 maps on which the game can be played, and the number is only likely to increase once the game exits its early access phase and is fully released. Generally speaking, the maps are designed to look like different kinds of warzones or typically environments where fighting may take place but do all differ somewhat.

What they all have in common, however, is the fact that as the game progresses their surface area decreases due to a toxic gas cloud. This is an important feature of H1Z1 as it is a method of ensuring that confrontations between players become more commonplace and accelerating each match toward a conclusion.

Players & Teams

H1Z1 is designed to allow up to a massive 150 players to take part at any one time. In competitive tournaments and events, however, the number of players is usually set somewhere around 75 or 100 for each match.

There are then three different game modes to choose from, being solo mode where every player is out for themselves, 2-Player mode where pairs of players go against all other duos and 5-Player mode which sees squads of players battle for supremacy. Initial tournaments and competitions were almost all played out in Solo mode but there have more recently been some very successful team based events played in each of the other two modes.

General Gameplay

H1Z1 GameplayAt the beginning of every match of H1Z1, each and every player parachutes into a random location on the chosen map for the match. It is from then on that players, and or teams, must decide upon a strategy for survival. Generally speaking, the two major options in that regard are to either actively hunt other players or to finding a hiding place to lay low until the latter part of the match.

The map is designed to be explored and to reward those players who do investigate their surroundings with various supplies and items. Those include different weapons, equipment, first aid kits and even vehicles which can be used to get around the map more quickly. As an innovative additional feature, too, H1Z1 includes a crafting system whereby players can use scavenged items to create useful supplies, such as bandages or body armour.

The end of each H1Z1 match is then reached when there is only one player or only players from one team left alive. In many competitive events and tournaments, an outright winner is decided through a best of three or best of five match contest.

What Types of Bet are Available?

As we mentioned at the outset of this page, some online bookmakers – both traditional ones and eSports focussed ones – have begun offering some H1Z1 betting options. The game is, however, in its very early stages as an eSport and that is reflected in the types of bet which are currently available. In fact, generally speaking, the following is the only market which bookmakers presently provide and the number which do, is still fairly limited:

Match Winner – As things stand those bookmakers who do offer H1Z1 betting, only currently allow punters to bet on the individual player or team who they believe will win a match played out as part of a major tournament. Whilst this is a little disappointing, it is entirely understandable as H1Z1 is a very young eSport and as such it’s difficult for either bookmakers or potential punters to really know yet what other betting options may be viable.
