A debit card links directly to your bank account making it the easiest deposit method and one of the safest as although you have to enter your card details you have the protection of your bank monitoring any suspicous transactions as well as encryption at the bookmakers stopping your info getting stolen.

There are lots of options when it comes to debit cards, as virtually all bookies accept them, which is great news because as a punter you get to pick from the cream of the crop.

Debit Card Betting With Bet365

5|5

What are they like?

Debit card betting is arguably the most widely accepted form of payment method used in the Uk sports betting and gambling industry, so when it comes to choice of betting sites, you will have almost every single site to pick from. And if that is the case then where better to start than with bet365 Sport, one of the two sites that picks up a coveted 5/5 star rating from us.

As an online betting specialist, the company has one of the best and simplest sites to use and with a fantastic range of promotions, all of which are accessible if you deposit by debit card (including the Welcome Offer) you can’t really go wrong in terms of value over the longer term.

The site also scores well in the sheer volume of sports and fixtures covered, plus it has an extensive Live Streaming and In Play betting section, and outstanding and growing collection of Virtual Sports on offer and I think bet365 is also one of the best for its horse racing and soccer betting selection. So if you want to bet using your debit card, then bet365 would be our first port of call.

Debit Card Betting With Betvictor

What are they like?

Betvictor is another of our top debit card betting sites. They are the only other bookmaker that has landed our coveted and rare 5/5 star review and that is because this is a site that is not only beautiful to look at and easy to use, but the sheer wealth of betting options and promotions make it hugely attractive to punters.

With a fantastic mobile service alongside its website, BetVictor is a good mobile option too and what makes it all the more impressive is that the site offers generally good odds across a wide range of markets, with particularly impressive options on soccer, horse racing, golf and American Sports betting in particular.

With your debit card you’ll be able to access all the fantastic promotions on the BetVictor site, including the site’s welcome offer, and with a wide range of betting options available and good value odds being a prime consideration, you won’t go wrong if you elect to bet with your debit card at BetVictor.

Debit Card Betting With Coral

4.5|5

What are they like?

A few years ago, Coral would have been well down this list simply because their website was so poorly designed, it couldn’t showcase the better aspects of the site. However, now the site has been redesigned to be far more accessible and the net result is a fantastic betting option for customers that want to bet with their debit card.

The reason Coral scored 4.5/5 with us is that on some of the fixtures, there are not as many markets available as you would find with some of the other betting services in this list. While that lack of choice isn’t an issue for many, it will be for those punters who like to scour the markets for good value, less well-known bets.

However, in all other respects, Coral ticks all the right boxes. It’s welcome offer is accessible to debit card customers and is a great starting point for customers that want a simple, cheap and easy bonus to access. With a much improved mobile service too, Coral is now right up there with the best the UK has to offer.

Debit Card Betting With William Hill

4.5|5

What are they like?

William Hill is a name that many people recognise even if they have never placed a bet in their lives. However, for many punters, especially those of an older persuasion, William Hill may well be the place they made their first bet many moons ago. The company has made the transition into the online betting industry very well and as you would expect, their offer to customers is top notch.

Both its website and mobile service offer William Hill customers a plethora of bets but there are also extensive stats packages to access and even a radio service. Add to that a good value welcome bonus for new customers and it is easy to see why William Hill scored an impressive 4.5/5 stars with us in our review.

In fact, the only reason we marked William Hill down a little was that we felt the odds offered on a number of markets didn’t quite offer us the value of some other sites, but if you want a fantastic selection of markets, with great offers all accessible via debit card, then William Hill is a great option.

Debit Card Betting With Paddy Power

4.5|5

What are they like?

Debit card users won’t find a site that is as quirky or unusual as Paddy Power, but fortunately the Irish-based betting site also has some excellent value promotions and other offers that will make it very appealing for debit card customers to sign up with.

We have given the site a 4.5/5 rating, chiefly due to the extensive range of promotions and offers available, alongside its quirky nature and an excellent range of bets available across a range of sports.

However, where we marked Paddy Power down was the Welcome Offer, which while being accessible to debit card customers, is we feel a little on the lower value side compared to some its rivals and we also feel that Paddy could well be a little more generous on some of the odds they offer, especially for the bigger value events. However, with a plethora of promotions and odds boosts etc each day, you can often find prices boosted for the top events, which means they do deserve their spot on our best debit card betting sites list.

Debit Card Betting With Betfred

4|5

What are they like?

Betfred offers an eye-catching Welcome Offer that debit card customers can access, but there is also a lot more to like about the site than just its bonus for new customers. We love the range of free to play promotions on the site, as well as some of its other offers too.

The site has been improved a lot of late and now boasts a much better live streaming service and still a very good in play betting option. However, where the site falls down and loses a mark is that I think the design of it is very clunky and looks somewhat dated in comparison to other sites, I also feel it is not as stable as some others.

If you are a debit card customer looking to maximise your welcome bonus with a site, then Betfred is certainly one to consider at the present moment. It is also a good site for Virtual Sports fans and with a rating of 4/5 from us, it ticks all the major boxes for a top notch UK-based bookmaker.

Debit Card Betting With 888Sport

4.5|5

What are they like?

888 is a name that has become synonymous with poker over the years, but the site also boasts its own sports betting service 888Sport and we were very impressed with it, awarding it a fantastic 4.5/5 stars when we reviewed it last.

888Sport is probably not the best option for those who are going to go big on live streaming services or those who like to research their bets with statistics as the site is a bit light on both. However, those are only small considerations when you look at the positives that the site has.

The site boasts a fantastic selection of sports, both on the website and the mobile app. It is nicely designed and has a distinctive black and orange livery which is easy on the eye. Add to that a great selection of promotions, a welcome offer that is easy to access via direct debit and generally good odds across the board and you have a site that can go toe to toe with the best.

Debit Card Betting With Betfair

3.5|5

What are they like?

If you want to use your debit card for more than just betting at a sportsbook and you enjoy betting on the exchange, then the best option for you is Betfair, as this site, which landed a 3.5/5 rating from us, offers both to customers.

We rated the betting site at 3.5 out of five as we felt it didn’t offer the same great value as you find on the Betfair exchange, but the best value offer is on the sportsbook, so we’d sign up with the sportsbook offer and utilise it and then look at where the best markets are on the exchange to get better value.

You won’t have any issues using your debit card with Betfair, either on the sportsbook or the exchange and you’ll quality for the Welcome Offer when you sign up with the debit card. Odds on the sportsbook are middle of the road, but you can find better odds on the exchange.

Betfair Review

Debit Card Betting With Unibet

4|5

What are they like?

Unibet has earned a 4/5 star review with us and there are two real reasons for that, we are concerned of Unibet limiting some big winners very quickly, although they have paid out, and we also don’t like the fact that the Welcome Bonus comes with a wagering requirement attached, which we feel isn’t as good value as some other sites.

So that’s the negatives out of the way, so what are the positives? Well, Unibet is a great site if you are focused on pan-European betting as it not only has a great selection of markets for UK customers, but also a great range of bets on sports more popular in other parts of Europe and North America, such as Ice Hockey and Basketball for example.

Unibet also scores well from us for its excellent live streaming service and the fact its mobile app is very easy to use. It also has some unusual quirks and access across the full range of Unibet sites making it a good choice for those who like to wager cash across casino, bingo and poker games too.

The great news with paying by debit card when betting and depositing to your account is that you pretty much have the pick of UK betting services and in that case, we feel it is a straight choice between BetVictor and our pick, bet365 Sport.

The reason we have picked bet365 Sport for mobile as opposed to our other 5/5 star review betting site is simply that we feel the bet365 app is just slightly more user-friendly and has a few more enticing options, especially when it comes to live streaming and betting in play.

Using a debit card you can deposit a minimum of £5 into your account and up to a maximum of £20,000 and of course, these deposits are free to the account holder and the transfer will be instant into your betting account.

Withdrawals take between 1-5 banking days to process and the limits for withdrawals are the same as depositing, £5 minimum and £20,000 maximum.

How to Use Your Debit Card for Gambling Online

Debit CardUsing a debit card for online gambling is extremely safe, fast, and convenient. The debit card deposits money from your bank account immediately, so it is the preferred method for many a punter in the UK. Once you put in you details, the processor will verify that you have the money, and get you going right away.

You can then withdraw quickly and easily straight back to your bank account – here’s how to do both:

How To Deposit With Debit Card

Depositing using debit card is probably one of the easiest ways to transfer cash into your betting account as almost everyone will have access to a debit card through their bank account, so there’s not usually any need to set up extra accounts, purchase a card or similar.

All you need to do to deposit is to head to your betting account to the banking or depositing section of the site and then from there choose the debit card option.

Much like a credit card, you will need a few pieces of information to make a deposit. You’ll be asked to input the following details:

  • Full Name: Exactly as it appears on the card.
  • Date of Birth: Your date of birth as registered with your bank.
  • Debit Card Number: The long number across the front of the card.
  • Processing Company/Type of Card: Whether Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or another processing company.
  • CCV Code: Nearly all modern debit cards carry this 3-digit code on the back of the card as an added layer of security.

Deposit With Debit Card

In addition to these pieces of information, you may be asked for any number of additional personal details. These will likely include your address, telephone number, and email address, but may also include more personal questions and security questions.

Of course, after you input all your information, you’ll have to select how much you’d like to transfer from your bank account to your bookies account. The beauty of using a debit card is the speed with which the transfer is made. The processor will take a moment to verify that you in fact have sufficient funds in your account, and then the transfer will be made immediately.

When you deposit funds electronically via debit card, you should have the fund deposited and be placing wagers within 5 minutes easily.

Note: Be aware that many banks have fraud checks on some transactions that may require you to confirm the transaction either via a text message, or through your personal banking app. You may be asked to do this for your transaction, or you may not.

However, once given the green light by your bank, the funds will be transferred from your bank account to your betting account instantly.

How To Withdraw Using Debit Card

Unlike some other payment methods, almost all bookmakers are happy to allow you to withdraw via a debit card, although some will stipulate that you must have used the debit card to deposit into your account before you can make a withdrawal from your betting account using it.

Making a withdrawal with debit card is very simple…

  1. Log in to your betting account and head over to the banking section and select the withdrawal option.
  2. You will see your total withdrawable balance displayed and then from here, select the debit card withdrawal option and how much you want to withdraw back to your bank account.
  3. Once you have confirmed the withdrawal, the funds will be withdrawn from your betting account immediately, but it can take between 1-5 banking days for the funds to appear in your bank account.

Another thing to note is that before your first withdrawal, many UK betting sites now ask customers to complete a money laundering/fraud check by submitting documentation to prove that the user is who they say they are.

This can add additional time to the speed of your first withdrawal on the site, however once you have completed the security measures, future withdrawals will likely not require you to complete them again.

Pros & Cons Of Debit Card Betting Sites

As you can imagine, when using a common payment method such as debit card, there are plenty of positives to doing so, but there are also a couple of negatives that you should be aware of and we’ve outlined the key positives and negatives of using debit cards below.

Pros

  • Free And Instant To Deposit – One big plus for debit cards is that when using them to fund your betting account, you won’t incur any additional charges for using this payment method and the funds should be transferred over to your betting account instantly ready for you to use.
  • Familiarity And Very Common – While not everyone will have an eWallet service or use cryptocurrency as a payment method, the huge majority of people that bet online in the UK will have access to a debit card for their bank account. As such, people are very familiar with how they work and it is a payment method that is easily accessible and requires no additional setting up for the user.
  • Good Lower And Upper Deposit Limits – While some payment services offer higher minimum deposits and much lower maximum withdrawal limits, if you run your account using debit card then you have a low deposit and withdrawal minimum amount of £5, but a relatively high withdrawal limit of £20,000, which means that this service is a viable option for both smaller stakes gamblers and those punters that can afford to wager considerably more.
  • Can Be Tied To An eWallet Service – If you would like to pay by debit card, but don’t want to put your bank details in each time you make a transaction, you can link your card to an ewallet service, such as PayPal and use PayPal to make your deposits and withdrawals, with the funds essentially coming from your debit card/bank account. However, while this is a more secure way to deposit, you may accrue charges with PayPal for some transactions.
  • You Have Your Pick Of The Betting Sites – Almost every betting site will offer payments via debit cards meaning you have the widest choice of sites to pick from should you wish to use this payment method.
  • No Problem Receiving Welcome Offers – Some bookmakers will not accept deposits made by some payment methods for their promotions and welcome offers. However, debit card payments are almost ubiquitously accepted for all kinds of promotions, bonuses and other offers on sites where a deposit is required.

Cons

  • Secure But Not The Securest Form Of Payment – While using your debit card is very secure, and becoming more secure with the increasing measures your bank is putting in place when making transactions, using a debit card is still not as secure a method as some other payment options as you still have to enter in sensitive details when completing the transaction.
  • Transactions Appear On Your Statement – All transactions via debit card will appear on your bank statement, both deposits and withdrawals.

Countries Where Debit Cards Can Be Used For Betting

Given that a debit card is essentially a way to access funds in your personal bank account, regardless of where you live in the world, then as a general rule of thumb, if you live in a country where gambling is permitted, such as the United Kingdom, then there are no restrictions placed on what you can use your debit card for.

So, in countries where gambling is legal, you should be able to use your debit card to fund your betting account without an issue. This may well also be the case in countries where gambling operates within a ‘grey’ area of the law and is not subject to specific regulations.

Generally speaking, if a country or state does not allow gambling within its borders, then you will likely find you cannot use your debit card in this way.

Security: Stay Safe With Debit Card

Everyone is very familiar with using debit cards for a myriad of different transactions, from funding your betting account to paying for your weekly shop at the supermarket. As such, the many security conscious people are well aware of how to stay safe using a debit card but to recap, outlined below are some of the ways in which you can securely use your debit card when running your betting account.

Registered To Your Address

Personal DetailsEven before you consider using your debit card for betting, your card and account will have gone through a number of security checks to verify your identity, your personal details and of course, the card will also be registered to your address. It is very difficult for someone to set up a fake debit card in anybody elses name so as long as you keep your card details private you should be safe when transacting online.

CVV Number

Card DetailsCommonly called the ‘security number’ on the back of your card next to your signature, the CVV number is required to authorise all forms of online payments and payments made over the phone. You should always keep your CVV number secure and this forms the first line of security for users of debit cards. Basically if someone has managed to get an image or the details from the front of your card they still won’t be able to use them without seeing the back side.

Bank Fraud Checks

MonitoringAlongside the CVV number, your bank will also have in place a rigorous system to ensure that they can catch fraud before it happens. Many banks have upgraded their fraud detection services over the last few years as we have moved from using Chip and Pin services, to contactless payment methods. This means that banks will now black flag any transaction that they feel is unusual on your account and they will contact you to check the transaction, or ask you to confirm it using the banking app or via text message or similar.

SSL Technology

SSLAll banks will use the highest level of encryption services to protect your transaction, this is Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and it ensures that your details are encrypted between bank and bookmaker, while the transaction you have authorised is in progress. All banks and all debit card betting sites use this technology to keep their customers safe online.

If In Doubt Do Not Enter Your Debit Card Details

AlertOne of the biggest security issues for debit card users are the number of “phishing” emails and messages that they will receive. As a general rule of thumb, your bank will never ask you to enter in any account details or passwords via email, message or similar. If you are in any doubt as to whether what you have received is genuine, then never enter your debit card details and you will hopefully avoid these annoying phishing scams.

About Debit Cards

In terms of popularity, debit cards are probably the most commonly used payment method for people that enjoy a wager online. The fact that everyone with a UK bank account will likely have access to one means that they are one of the most accessible payment methods for the average punter.

Each financial institution that offers debit cards will have its own card which is linked directly to your bank account and any transactions you make with your card are taken from your funds held in your account.

Debit cards are accepted everywhere and the fact people are so used to them means they are often their first choice when it comes to using a payment method to fund a sports betting account online.

How Does Debit Cards Work?

Debit Cards Contact Information

As debit cards are issued directly from banks and other financial institutions, you should find a list of contacts available to you from the bank that holds your account. You will often find a bank has a dedicated phone number, email address and perhaps a live chat service for enquiries, while many banks are also using social media to interact with customers too.

If you check on the reverse of your debit card, you will often find a phone number for your debit card bank account which you can contact in the case of an emergency or suspected fraud. Other contact numbers at your bank may also be listed here too.

Of course, what is available to you depends on your bank and what services that they offer to customers in terms of contacting them, but please note that there can be some lengthy waits with some banks to speak to a customer services representative, especially at busier times of the day.

Company History

The first debit card in the UK dates back to June 1987 when Barclays offered the Connect card to their customers. Although it was branded differently, this card in effect was a form of Visa Delta debit card.

A short time later, NatWest released their version of the debit card, Switch, which offered customers at NatWest and other banks linked to NatWest their first debit card.

Initially, the security for debit card purchases was a signature, as was the case for credit card transactions back them. In 2004 though, advances in technology meant that Chip-and-Pin terminals became more widely available, which meant than rather than a signature, customers entered a four-digit PIN to verify the transaction, which would have to require the PIN that was stored on the chip embedded on the card.

Chip-and-Pin remains in use to this day, but recently the development of mobile technology in particular has seen the introduction of Contactless payments for purchases of up to £100.

Nowadays, there are three major debit card services that are used by the banks. They are Visa Debit, MasterCard Debit and Maestro. Fortunately, there is little difference between using any of these services in the UK and they are all available with a wide range of betting sites, online retailers and across the high street.

Debit Card Betting FAQs

Your questions answered...

How Long Do Debit Card Deposits And Withdrawals Take?

With a debit card, a deposit into a betting account should be completed instantly once the transaction has been verified. Your funds should be in your betting account within seconds of the transaction being completed.

Withdrawals can take between 1-5 banking days to be processed depending on your betting site and bank. However, if your transaction requires additional security measures, or you need to verify yourself for your first withdrawal with a bookmaker, this can slow down the withdrawal process until the measures have been completed.
