Review of Betfred

Editors Note:

Betfred are one of the most well known high-street bookmakers and in this Betfred review we’re looking at how their online service stacks up against the competition. We’ve given their service an 4 star rating overall which makes them one of our top 10 online bookmakers.

I’ve had an online account with Betfred for at least 10 years and there’s no doubt in my mind they’re a reputable company that will pay out on winning bets.

Their site is packed full of features including in-play betting, improved live streaming, stats, cash out and loads of different promotions. They do have a few issues though, when compared to the bigger name bookies, which will be highlighted further below but they revolve mainly around design and a need for modernisation (although their app / mobile site does this well).

New customers are going to find one of the most unique sign up offers of any bookmaker at Betfred and a mountain of other long standing promotions which are especially good for football and horse racing.

Pros & Cons of Betfred

Betfred is licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and is therefore regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner as well as the UK Gaming Commission.

For conformation of the registration, the license numbers granted to Betfred are 036 and 038. It’s not that uncommon to find bookmakers based in Gibraltar and licensed by Gibraltar and the UK – they do it to avoid the large tax bills they’d get if they operated out of the United Kingdom.

The fact that Betfred are regulated by two government organizations means that Betfred must, among other things:

  • Behave in a manner that ensures that all gambling on the site is fair and unbiased.
  • Ensure that only those over the age of 18 are allowed to use the services offered.
  • Provide assistance to anyone with problems related to excess gambling.

How To Deposit To Betfred

Depositing on Betfred is relatively simple. Just log in to your account and then click on the “Deposit” button. A series of fields will be displayed which you need to complete.

Then simply enter in the amount of deposit you wish to make and confirm using your password.

Of course, UK customers can no longer use credit cards for deposits, but there are a number of other options available to you including debit cards, ewallet services, bank transfer and you can add funds to your account at any of Betfred’s high street shops.

How To Withdraw From Betfred

Given the recent changes about depositing and withdrawing in the UK, Betfred is like most other bookmakers operating in the UK in that they will attempt to make any withdrawal you request back to your most recent payment method.

To make a withdrawal, log into your account and click on the Withdraw link. Once you have done this, you can then enter how much you wish to withdraw and select from the available withdrawal methods available to you.

How Long Does It Take To Withdraw At Betfred

Before you make a withdrawal at Betfred, you do need to complete the site’s standard security checks, which involve supplying documents confirming your identity. This can take 48 hours to process on top of the time your first withdrawal takes to be processed.

However, once you have completed these checks, you won’t need to complete them again for future withdrawals.

How quickly you receive your cash from a withdrawal at Betfred depends on the method used.

  • Debit Cards – 3-5 Working Days
  • eWallet Services – Up to 2 days
  • Bank Transfer – Up to 7 days

One thing that Betfred certainly does well on the site is its customer support services.

This starts with an extensive help section (accessed via the FAQs link at the bottom of the page) which is very good for resolving many of the simpler and more common queries people have about their account and the site.

However, the site also allows customers to contact them in a number of different ways.

This includes a Live Chat service, a dedicated phone number for calls inside the UK, another number for calls originating outside of the UK and an Email address which you can contact the company on.

  • Live chat: access via ‘Contact Us’ link on site/app
  • Email: support@betfred.com
  • Inside UK phone number: 0800 028 7747
  • Outside UK phone number: +44 (0)1925 878269

It’s good to see a site that offers an extensive range of ways to contact the company as that can be reassuring to customers who like to have a range of options to contact their provider to resolve an issue. Betfred reviews well in this category vs other bookmakers hence their 9/10 score.

Betfred Mobile Review

Out of over 7,800 reviews, BetFred’s mobile app has scored a respectable 3.9 out of 5, which isn’t bad but which is significantly lower than a number of their competitors. Why is that the case?

Well unfortunately, there do seem to be technical difficulties with the app that a number of users have reported. Typically, the app crashing is an issue for some, while for others it is very slow and as such is almost impossible to use at times.

Now of course, this does depend on the version of the app running and the machine on which the customer is using the app and to be fair to Betfred, they have updated the app recently to hopefully address many of these issues.

The latest version does, on smartphones at least, seem smoother, but it is still not quite up there with the very best mobile sites. We still feel the design of the app, which is available for Android and iOS devices, is a little dated. It is unnecessarily complicated to find promotions (you need to scroll right on the secondary menu) or some markets and the whole app does need some work to bring it up to the standards of other companies offerings.

It’s a shame as the site does offer generally very good odds, especially on football and horse racing, and excellent promotions and these are accessible in via the app.

Betfred Desktop Review

BetFred’s desktop website is, we feel, certainly more stable than its app offering and we also feel that it is much easier to navigate around using a mouse or similar. It tends to follow the same layout of most sites; menu on the left and at the top of screen, promotions prominently displayed, popular betting markets or in play betting shown at the top of the page and bet slip to the right.

However, one small gripe is that the site just doesn’t look as appealing as others. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the site design, to us it just looks a little dated. It hasn’t really changed a great deal over the years in terms of looks, although its stability and user-friendliness have been markedly improved.

The Live Streaming options have also been improved recently, although the In-play betting options still feel a little dated.

That’s not to say that there are huge things wrong with the site. There aren’t – and the main issues are merely cosmetic, and very much down to personal opinion, the mechanics of the website are actually pretty sound and better than the app versions in our view.

How To Join Betfred

  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Click on the box to state you are over 18.
  4. Complete the next sections on the site which include your Personal, Contact, Address and Settings details – ignore any promo code fields as you’ll automatically get the welcome bonus without one.

Markets & Odds at Betfred

Great depth of markets

What can you bet on at Betfred?

7|10
  • 25+ different sports
  • Great for football
  • Good prices
  • Limited live streaming
Bet £10 get £40 bonus

T&C’s apply, 18+, New customers only.

In this section of our Betfred review we’re going to take a look at what you can bet on and the live betting options at Betfred.

Betfred offers the possibility to bet on a range of different sports, however the depth of markets per sport and per event isn’t quite up to standard with the likes of Betvictor and Bet365 so don’t be surprised to see less market options here. Sports that can be bet on include:

  • American Football
  • Athletics
  • Aussie Rules
  • Badminton
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • eSports
  • Football
  • Gaelic Football
  • Golf
  • Greyhounds
  • Handball
  • Horse Racing
  • Hurling
  • Ice Hockey
  • Lottery
  • Motor Sports
  • Politics
  • Pool
  • Rugby
  • Snooker
  • Specials
  • Tennis
  • UFC / MMA

As can be seen, the amount of sports to bet on is wide, and the different sports can all be expanded on by clicking on the relevant selection on the menu, located on the left of the screen (use a-z menu on app).

This will bring up various options for each sport, all the way from regular bets, such as the final score, through to more obscure bets, such as the number of corners in football. As a general rule you will find less betting options per event than at some of the other bigger online bookmakers.

You can also access all of the markets at Betfred via the Betfred mobile app.

Live streaming used to be only available on horse racing and greyhounds but has recently been upgraded… more on that below.

In-Play Betting

New improved live streaming

Is live betting offered?

8|10
  • Live betting on all sports
  • Streams for multiple sports
  • Comprehensive scores & stats
  • Constantly updated odds
Bet £10 get £40 bonus

T&C’s apply, 18+, New customers only.

Betfred also offer live or in-play betting if you prefer via a dedicated section on their website.

Betfred InplayThe Betstream interface they use makes it easy to place bets instantly and they’ve recently massively upped their game when it comes to in match stats, graphics and scores – which was much needed. The odds are updated on an regular basis throughout any match and prices are competitive.

Their in-play offering is a definitely second best when you compare the live options offered by the likes of Bet365 who allow their punters to see full match information, live odds and in most cases a stream of the event taking place.

Betfred need to get this sorted if they are going to compete with the big boys in the industry and for this reason alone we don’t believe they belong in the high star rating categories.

Betfred Live Streaming Review

Live streaming was previously available but only for horses and greyhounds at Betfred with punters who want to watch needing to bet a a minimum of £1 on the race in question – this still applies but many more sports have been added to the service.

Recently the likes of football, tennis, snooker, cricket, volleyball, handball, ice hocket and many other sports have been added to Betfred’s streaming service which can be accessed by clicking on the In-Play section and then selecting the ‘Watch Live’ link.

Alternatively look our for the green ‘Watch Live’ tag next to the market which includes a small play button which can be clicked to get to the stream.

Outside of horse racing and greyhounds, where you need to bet on the race to watch, you can watch all other live streams as long as you have a funded account balance.

The fact you don’t need to bet to watch all sports and new sports have been added means we’ve recently upgrade the rating in this section of our Betfred review from a 7/10 to an 8/10.

How To Use The Betfred Bonus

One of the most appealing factors when joining Betfred is the site’s good value welcome bonus offer, but from reviews, it appears a number of people have missed out on receiving it due to not understanding how it works. Avoid that mistake by following the simple steps we’ve outlined below.

Here’s how to use the bonus:

  1. Log in to your BetFred account, deposit at least £10 and find a sports bet of odds of even money (2.0) or better that will be settled within seven days of registering – place the bet.
  2. You will receive your free bets, £10 in free spins within ten hours of your bet settling.
  3. To use your free bets now head back onto Betfred and find the market you want to bet on.
  4. Click the odds to add the bet to your slip.
  5. Now select your stake, make sure you have the ‘Place Using Free Balance’ option checked, and then hit place bet.
  6. To use free spins just open the casino and accept the spins via the pop-up.

Remember that if you bet wins using a free bet stake you’ll get the winnings from the bet returned to your account but not the stake amount itself. Any winnings from slot machine spins can be cashed out straight away.

Overall Review

Here’s our overall take on things…

Our Verdict of Betfred

Best promotions of any bookmaker
OUR RATING FOR:
BETFRED
4 | 5

In our reviews section we’ve given Betfred 4 out of 5 stars which is the third highest grade we dish out to any online bookmaker.

They are licensed with a good reputation among online punters and always pay out on winning bets.

when it comes to long standing promotions they have plenty available to football, horse racing and greyhound racing fans. When compared to all other bookmakers we’ve reviewed Betfred come out top of the pile on promotions and it’s a mjor plus point for them.

Plus their welcome offer is also one of the best around.

There are a couple problems with Betfred thought and until they do something to resolve them we just can’t rank them any higher.

Firstly their live betting offering just isn’t up to standard. There’s not enough live streaming and even though stats and graphics are better than before they still don’t compare to the big boys.

Second up, whilst many sports are available to bet, the option of bets available per event is no where near as good as some of the other players in the industry. Often Betfred will have around 50 markets for popular events when others are offering 100+.

The bottom line is that until the above issues are fixed they won’t make it into a highest categories. However the sheer number of promotions they run, and their quality sign up offer which has virtually no wagering requirements, means we highly recommend you open an account.
